Meet the Volunteer Committee
Jerry Abern 1932-2003
Founder of Stamporama
Jerry, born in 1932, began collecting stamps during WWII with a
collection inherited from an uncle. Like many of us do, he dropped
stamps until he got hooked again while introducing them to his 9 year
old daughter in 1972. Collecting didn't "take" with the daughter, but
Jerry was heavily involved in stamps until his death on February 5, 2003.
A teacher and Guidance Counsellor for 28 years, Jerry was retired and
spent a great deal of time in volunteer work. He started Stamporama
when he got a new computer in 1996 and "looked up who was interested
in stamps and started Stamporama with 6 members in January 1996".
Jerry said, at one time, "Although we are still growing, I think of Stamporama as a family
of stamp collectors. I feel that every member means a lot to me and I will
always be grateful that I started this great club!"
We will miss Jerry's influence and dedication to Stamporama, but we are committed
to carrying on his tradition.
