Right now i am interested in Dutch Indies post cards and covers...my Guatemala and Argentina collections are napping...i usually see the same old stamps for them on the internet or in circuit books. I wish i could break the ties with the 9 Scott Internationals...they will never be satisfied..but then i would have to stop looking at the Stamporama auctions..that tell me why not bid ? I guess other people have bigger problems than i have.Happy

re: Old collecting areas dormant but never dead

Ah! Two of anything is a pair, three is a set, and four is a collection! Based on this I am easily impressed with bright shiny objects.. or old paper!

I have concentrated on my beloved Franklins the last 15 years, after being out of the hobby for the 20 years prior to discovering eBay, and that the very elusive was now within my grasp.

But I never disturbed the hoard, having moved those boxes on my last four relocations, and knowing there would be a time someday. As I've discovered this site, I started to dig into these boxes with the idea of putting some approval books together. As I sorted I think that would be premature since I don't know exactly how I want to progress in this hobby.

For instance, I would like to build an album of USA with my cut off being 1980, since that was the era of my old collection and the time I was fond of. I have kept aside interesting things liked socked on the nose blocks of fours, singles of all four corners with plate numbers, mint stamps, plate blocks, first day covers and interesting usage. Even during my eBay era I have gone low balling and have snagged some great stamps of the 19th century including number one.

So in my vision, I would go through everything and put it in order on stock pages, then eventually make album pages for what I have. So a specific page for a stamp may have a plate block and a first day cover for one stamp, and the next page for the next catalog number may just be a set of 4 corner plate blocks. I probably would have everything 20th century, and with my vision it would be in several binders that I'd enjoy looking through. If you get my drift.

Then I have found small collections in stock books, such as Germany and Italy, and some topicals and things I assembled way back then. I'll have to decide what may be of interest to me in the future and what I should divest and send on to new homes where they'd be appreciated.

Phil, I have the same experiences as you. I move from one sales circuit category to another. Sometimes moving from one category more slowly than others. Some countries/areas just aren't that easy to find stamps for. Latin America being one of them. I found many stamps to add to the albums, but often there are only a few members offering that material.

When it gets to the same stamps in two consecutive circuits, then I drop that one and move to another. One of the newer circuit categories I am receiving is Independent Africa. Liberia and Ghana tend to dominate that one, but there are plenty of other countries represented (mostly ex-French). I am certainly filling up many holes in this area now!

One thing that is funny is seeing books from Africa that contain countries that are not part of that continent. Tonga and Bhutan show up regularly in sales book of Africa. Oh well, so, those countries are getting worked on too!
