They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. -Benjamin Franklin

When I was in my early teens, and completely enraptured by the "stamp collecting bug," my philatelic aspiration was simple: to own a Regent Stamp Album and obtain the mounted collection of 50,000 different worldwide offered by my dealer of choice, Raymond H. Weill of New Orleans. While I never did either one of these things (girls, college, beer, etc. took precedence), I still fondly remember that time and those long ago dreams of philatelic completion.

Even now I often peruse collections offered on eBay or elsewhere and have to frequently do a "reality check" ("do I really need this?" "can I fit this into my budget?" etc.). I believe stamp collectors as a whole are possessed of a certain memory prowess which enables us to associate aspects of our collecting experiences with our past. And when I go through these old collections and lots, I am reminded of those dreams of acquisition and fulfillment from my long ago past.

Just thinking out loud and meandering down memory lane...

notice the past tense "had" money for the beer. It's rough making those decisions, more beer or more stamps, beer, stamps. Oh heck, just cut back on eating so much, that will save a bundle alone for even more beer and stamps.

I had a couple of opportunities to visit the Weill brothers in New Orleans. A great shop, and the brothers were two great guys!

I started saving stamps off envelopes at about 10 years old. It was when I grew out of playing with Barbies.

The same can be said for me too. However, I have to say that we still enjoy the occasional
beer. I might add, both my wife and I collect, so, we have the best of both worlds. Winking
