General Philatelic/Gen. Discussion : What sheet protector to buy?

I would like to buy some letter-size archival sheet protectors, non-glossy or semi-glossy, preferably heavy weight. Perhaps our brave, new "paperless" society has less use for such protectors, but I've not been able to find any here in Vancouver. Can someone recommend a good on-line source of sheet protectors?

Avery males an acid free sheet protector. They come in a pack of 50. The UPC is 077711743052.

I'm sure you could get them from any office supply store/site like Office Max, Office Depot or Staples. Not sure what you have in Canada.

Yes! Try keepfiling.com I use both the heavyweight and Super heavyweight page protectors. It looks like your best bet would be the Low reflective style. The quality is really good. I only endorse, because I've been using the product for years.

re: What sheet protector to buy?

Actually, I prefer to use the light-weight sheet protector. It cuts down on the bulk, so one can get more pages in a binder. And the pages themselves are 65# stock, so heavy-weight sheet protectors are not needed for re-enforcement. All the sheet protectors have to do is "protect the sheet" from my messy fingers Happy

I've also moved in the lighter direction. The Heavyweight sheet, though, is fairly light. Super heavyweight is a little overkill for my purposes.

re: What sheet protector to buy?

Thank you for your suggestions. I'll probably order a package from KeepFiling.com, although the shipping price to Canada is more than twice the cost of the package of sheet protectors. I am perhaps showing my age, but I am also often astonished at shipping costs, and often don't place orders because of that cost. And it seems that more and more products, ones that used to be commonly available at ordinary retail outlets, are being sold only on-line.

I prefer heavier sheet protectors used with lighter paper, which is easier on printers.

Bob - Staples - that's where I get all my heavy duty sheet protectors and at a great price. I also use cardstock so I can have two duplex printing - cuts album thickness bit very well protected and free post to your door!

re: What sheet protector to buy?

Stanley Gibbons, running down its accessories stock in favour of high-end stuff like autographs, now offers a £6.95 Leuchtturm pack of 5 exhibition sheet protectors at the knock-down price of £3.50.

The urbane gentleman who sold me ten packs murmured that no other outlet sells these any longer. He could not bring himself to admit in so many words that his stock was going at half-price, and we had a few moments of mutual non-communication as I tried to establish whether these were the right size, weight, etc. They were.

Stanley Gibbons used to have a pleasing 'Penny Black' sign over their shop, visible from way down the Strand, to indicate that it catered for stamp-collectors. That's gone. Sic transit gloria mundi, and all that.

We have stores here in Toronto called Dollar Stores. It's a store full of stuff for around a dollar. And some of them sell Letter size sheet protectors. I get 10 for a dollar.

Ok. You might say they're not that good but I've seen the same ones for sale at Staples and other places for much more. I go in and buy 5 packs for a dollar each and they last me for awhile !

Make sure the cheaper ones are acid-free and archival safe.

Plastic sleeves, if not archival safe, may have chemicals in their make-up that can cause the ink of the stamp to transfer to the plastic.

re: What sheet protector to buy?

A follow-up: Yesterday, I received my order of polypropylene "Low Reflective Heavyweight" sheet protectors from KeepFiling.com. Initial reaction? A good purchase. They're actually a bit lighter than I would prefer); the surface inside and out is lightly pebbled, which makes them easy to insert paper into and keeps them from being too reflective.

I might order more eventually, but 200 will last a long time, especially if I don't do any more exhibiting. (Most of my stamps and covers are in stock books or stock sheets; I rarely use album pages, but recently printed albums for Viet Cong and Viet Minh issues.

The difficulty I had of finding good-quality sheet protectors here in Vancouver makes me wonder if we're seeing a change resulting from our move to a digital, "paperless" society. Staples certainly doesn't have the same range of sheet protectors that it used to have, nor does it have the same broad inventory of paper it once had. The fact that I had to order sheet protectors on-line is indicative of what seems to be a general trend among retailers to move away from brick-and-mortar shops to virtual on-line shops. Vancouver used to have three large Office Depot stores and a couple of Grand & Toy office supply stores; both companies are apparently open now only as on-line retailers/wholesalers.

Thanks to the Stamporama members who suggested that I try KeepFiling.com. I'm glad I did.

re: What sheet protector to buy?

Bob, I understand your point. We used to buy very nice paper and envelopes for resumes, today we email them! I work pretty much virtual, working in the office only when necessary and at home most of the time. My job involves working with people at manufacturing facilities around the world, so I seldom meet in person. Most of my job is either on the phone or in Live computer screen meetings. I don't keep any paper, we work with files we keep on a SharePoint site. If I get paper, I'll scan it.

Most brick and mortar stores have web presence as well, and even encourage you to order on-line for in store delivery. I live in Pennsylvania, about 20 minutes from the Delaware border. It's pretty much sport here to order big ticket things like televisions and snow blowers on-line for delivery to the nearest Delaware store since PA is 6% sales tax and DE is ZERO%.

I buy a lot of stuff on eBay and on-line stores. I bought my digital camera and a pair of new headlights for my Dodge Caravan on eBay for very cheap money-- post paid and the stuff showed up literally within 24 hours. Last week I needed a part for my lawn sprinkler system. Both Lowes and Home Depot listed the item (a check valve rebuild kit) in their on-line stores but failed to stock it in their stores. Price was $50. I did a little shopping and bought the part for $29. Just today I ordered a new pool cover pump that the local Leslie's pool supply wanted $199 plus sales tax, on eBay for $121 postpaid complete and I should have it on Friday.

Even in the hobby, I just bought 5 packs of 100 Ultra-Pro album pages for $73, that's $14.60 a box and a lifetime supply. Last time I saw those in a stamp shop they were $30 a box. It's a new world out there!

YAY! I'm glad that one worked out for you. I too was surprised that "Heavyweight" was not as heavy as I thought it would be.

There are several large retail chains where I've been able to order a specialty office product online and then pick it up at their physical store location and not pay any shipping.

I've done it both with Staples and Walmart. (Walmart online had Avery labels at a price that could not be beat.)
