United States/Stamps : Can someone tell me the difference between the types (2 and 4) for US #7 and #9?

Some time ago I bought US Scott # 7 and # 9, taking the dealers' description as gospel. ( I know, I know!) The #7 is a type 2 and the #9 is a type 4 ... what ever the heck that means. I've been searching stamp identifiers on the net, but to no avail.

Can someone tell me the difference between the types or where to get the info ?
