Phil, are you talking about areas like Mount Athos? Those are at the end of the Greece listings. I'm not sure what else you mean by province cities stamps from the 1990s.

Michael, they are called "department seats" in the scott catalog..they are fairly long sets issued in the 1990s in regular stamps and booklets. The album has pages for both types but scott does not assign a separate number to the booklet type..that seems odd !

Okay. Yes, I know what you're talking about.

Makes no sense to me. (That's another thing to add to the list of changes to make when I buy Scott.) Scott only mentions that the booklet stamps are cheaper than the sheet stamps. The booklet stamps are easily identified from the sheet stamps by the straight edges on the sides. Scott assigns major numbers if two stamps have .25 difference in perf gauge. One would think that a major number is necessary for stamps produced with different printing methods and that very evident different appearances. But try to tell Scott that.

re: Need some information on Greek province cities

Hi Phil,

It's strange but Scott just adds a note after each set saying the booklet stamps exist and giving guidelines on prices. At least that's all there is in my 2009 edition.

SG lists the stamps separately with A and B numbers for the sheet and booklet stamps respectively, e.g. the 1990 2d Mytilene stamp is listed as SG 1795A (from sheets of 50 and also from a booklet pane of mixed values SG 1795cA) and SG 1795B (from strips of 5 in booklets).

Nigel, that's what I mentioned. And the booklet stamps are not listed in the 2015 catalog either.

nl1947 thanks but i have not gone as far as translating...Stanley Gibbons is more efficient..if the stamps were from the U.S. or Canada they would have assigned numbers to each. It makes me wonder "what are stamps worth?" when i am offered ... a 7 dollar Staples binder, computer printed pages from 1990 to 2006 in protective sleeves for SIX DOLLARS ! The 2004 Greek Olympic Medal winners sheet alone catalogs $30.00 !

re: Need some information on Greek province cities

Phil, The Greek Hellas catalog lists them as "Capitals of Prefectures"
First set was issued in 1988 Scott #'s 1634-1648 Hellas #'s 1806-1820 and 1806A-1820A
for Stamps "imperforate on shorter sides" and 1806B-1820B for stamps "with number underprint".
Second set of 1990 is Scott #'s 1685-1699. Hellas #'s 1856-1869 and Part perf 1856A-1869A.
Third set of 1992 is Scott #'s 1749-1760. Hellas #'s 1916-1927 part perf #'s 1916A-1927A.
Fourth set of 1994 is Scott #'s 1792-1801. Hellas #'s 1958-1967 part perf #'s 1958A-1967A
I think the first perf similar set issued were the 1986 Olympian Gods
There are other later sets like the Greek Castles and Greek dancers with the same type of numbering for the different perf formats used. I believe Steiner makes pages for all of these.
Scott is very inadequate when it comes to Greece, especially for the Large and small Hermes heads. I would just use the Scott number and add an "A" after each for the part perf.
It's your collection and you can do what you want, Scott will probably probably do the same in the future.

Thanks Mitchell, lately i am picking up collections that the main stream is just not interested in like Sri Lanka and Greece for probably 3 cents on the dollar. I will take them because someone spent a lot of money putting them together postally used. Not an easy task !

re: Need some information on Greek province cities

Phil,

I think in the long run that modern used stamps will become more valuable than mint.
Meters are used more than stamps and most collectors will just buy new issues from the P.O. instead of waiting for them on incoming mail. When you're paying 3% it does not matter much what it is unless it is very common. Pretty hard to lose money at that rate. Hope you are working on early Greece as well, it is one of my favorite areas. I just started concentrating on it about two years ago and it is quite a challenge. I left it for next to last in Europe to concentrate on and it is getting close to complete. The biggy I'm saving for last is Spain which is one of the hardest countries of all to get near completion.
Also for last are the large stamps of 19th century G.B. which I will not probably get to picky about.

" ... Scott is very inadequate when it comes to Greece ...."

I'll say!

In fact, once a collector is exposed to the Facits, Yverts and other nationsl catalogs it becomes apparent that Scotts is quite inadequate in most countries.
The ignoring of straight edges as separate issues is particularly weak when it comes to Machins where many different issues are most easily identified by the fact of a straight edge.
