People have accused me of being "unconcious " when playing roulette or finding covers..whatever works, i was looking at a batch of railroad Railroad Postoffice covers today and this one struck my eye...a bit later, oh December 7, 1941 ! Then the address Columbia County where i grew up and went to school. All in all a good cover !Image Not Found

re: R.P.O cover December 7, 1941

Hi Everyone;

I have a stamped envelope, cut square with a R.P.O. CDS, cancel. I realize that they are not real
common, but would this one be worth more, especially to someone who has an interest in this specialty?

Just sortin'....

re: R.P.O cover December 7, 1941

fabulous cover, Phil; lovely in ALL respects: RPO, first trip of a new locomotive, nice cachet, and, yes, something about that date rings familiar

Ken, it's possible. each additional element of a cover brings its potential value higher. For PSE cut squares, you're already in a small group, but an RPO collector might see it and want it for that, or a cutsquare RR collector.... who knows. I find RPOs in the bargain bin all the time, so unless it's a rare cancel, it's not likely to bring much.

What brings in the real good values on RPO cancels are complete covers, but they also need cancellations from predecessor roads, or roads that were short-lived.

Ken, don't toss the cut square. I know of one railroad fan who would be interested in it, if you don't want it. (hint...hint)

Don't really need a reprint of the article, since the magazine issue is currently available.

Anglophile, Thanks for the offer...at this point i do not feel i need it...if there is a portion of the article that you guys could show here it would be great. The cover is in my "General United States" cover collection..i do not collect R.P.O.s per se....if i did i could pick up postcards and covers with R.P.O postmarks in bulk at the Troy stamp show every third Sunday. They seem to come in bunches from the same R.P.O.

I love the irony of your cover Phil! I don't have a RPO collection, but that one would make it into my "Cool Stuff" album for sure!

BTW, is there a complete list of RPOs? I imagine there is! I'm thinking my era of 1903-08 for my Franklins, I do have many already. Or for New Jersey, my NJ postmark collection. I imagine when I run out of easy towns to collect I'd want to collect the routes.
