Several other countries also issue hunting permit stamps (not all of them are "duck" stamps). A few of them off the top of my head include: Argentina, France, Mexico, Russia, United Kingdom...
For the USA, hunting permit stamps are issued at the national (federal) level (duck hunting), the state level (fishing, deer hunting, etc.), and even Native American tribes.
Canada issues not only the federal hunting ("duck") stamps but most provinces also issue hunting permit stamps, some of them of multiple types depending upon what is to be hunted. This array can add a considerable number to the potential size of a complete collection. Of course the often-repeated theme of these discussions applies--collect what you choose to collect. I personally collect only the federal issues, which I must add are very attractive.
As usual... Prompt replies and lots of information - I'll look up my hunting stamps and put up some pics when I get a chance.
I would be interested in seeing more pics..
Cheers

Australian Deer & Duck stamps - 1976 & 1977
I started a collection of US Hunting Permit stamps. I love US BoB stamps. My gosh, they are incredibly expensive! Is it because not that many are issued? Or maybe not that many are still around?
New Zealand has a Game Bird Habitat stamp program:

Lisa,
I'm not a duck collector, but I suspect that the following are all in play.
first, they have high face value. Earliest ones were $3 when first class stamps were 3c.
second, they were ALWAYS designed to generate funds. They are CONSERVATIONS stamps more than anythng, and the funds from them go into the preservation of wetlands and other habitats.
I am sure the number issued is much smaller than almost any postage stamp. Each hunter needs only 1.
Today, many ducks come in multiple formats, each more precious than the last, and many sell out in pre-order.
and, i suspect that, like stamps, early stamps were issued before collectors caught on, en masse.
or so i think

Thank you, David, that makes sense. I spent a decent amount of money, considering the small budget I set aside for stamps, completing my MNH Parcel Post collection. I love those stamps so it was completely worth it. I also have a penchant for duck stamps, but there are so many variations and none are really low value, it will be a collection that grows slowly over time.
Lisa,
the used stamps are significantly less....
David
Hi Guys,
Is it only the USA, Canada and Australia that issue Hunting Permit Stamps ?
Are these stamps issued for the whole Country concerned or are they issued on a "State by State" basis?
I have a few Australian ones and wondering if they could be the basis of a new "collection" - How many stamps would / could be involved (approx.) :-)
Steve.
