UPDATE (6-Apr @ 1145) From some of the wailing and caterwauling you'd think it was three weeks since my last update, so I was surprised to see it's closer to 2.5 days. Updated commentary is color coded for your reading pleasure. Clients just arrived and want to give me money. More to follow...eventually amsd...eventually...

(3-Apr @ 1645) To preserve the integrity of designated Topic Forums any Hoard-Related postings/scans going forward with respect to certain interesting finds, requests for more pictures, etc, will be posted to the appropriate Discussion section with a prefix designation "Hoard" so you can track the provenance back here and my related posts. Cheers, Dave.

I must admit to being a bit underwhelmed by the feedback so far. Unfitting for a man who considers himself the center of the universe (kind of a human-based version of Toronto for cities or the USA for countries...) of voyeurs but few contributors. Shy? Bereft of ideas? Complacent? Who knows, but the usual suspects have weighed in and I am grateful. So, I'm going to start a contest at the end of which someone will receive a fabulous (to be named later) prize. As The Supreme Benevolent Dictator I will be the sole arbiter of parameters and points assignments. Here's the starting lineup:

amsd: +120
..First responder. As always, heroism is appreciated. Namaste.
..Noted that Santa Claus is no joke. Ha, I knew my Christmas stocking didn't just stuff itself!
..Kudos for the music video that almost (but not quite) made up for your constant kvetching about your sorry lot in (points-earning) life and endless bleating about the anxiety of needing more information on available prize packets.

michael 78651: +260
..Recognized a $1.00 Canadian stamp even though it was expressed with our peculiar currency notation.
..I gave him a small penalty for bringing camping into a stamp discussion thread. This transgression has been duly reported and there may be further repercussions from the Discussion Board Moderator. Sent me a private (erroneous) mea culpa after misreading my original comment here and missing my joke - thinking he had somehow reported me for bad behavior. That has to cost "Captain Serious" something... Offset by a large bonus for me not realizing I was ratting him out to ...uh...himself as DBM (not to be confused with SBD).
..Partial buy-back for noting an RPO in my picture. Posted and comments received, points added.

damichab:+20
..Asked about older Australian stamps and gave encouragement that I may unknowingly possess "a gem". Bonus points may apply if he lets me know WTH that means. Maybe start a thread or point me to one, or supply a link that gives examples of what to look for. Probably useful for others here too who may have Aussie stamps.
..Slight deduction for explaining the technical aspects of what constitutes a "gem" in mineralogy circles in response to my question about what sorts of Aussie stamps would be considered gems, but redemptive pointage with some nice scans of stamps I am pretty certain I will not come across.
..The inquiry about factoring in "Likes" in my points system was just enough to give me another comedic idea. Emphasis on the words "just" and "comedic".

ikeyPikey: +290
..He won't explain the Turing-Babylonian-Klingon connection; and he ratted me out for recycling Cheech and Chong's classic schlong joke. Not cool dude. Plus, he's a constant reminder that I may not be the smartest man in the room. Sheesh! I'm being petty, I know, but I am the SBD! Your other comments will be reconsidered when I cool down a bit.
..OK, I've relaxed after having some chai tea and reading a little Buddha story (apparently he walked into a pizza place and said "make me one with everything...") The envelope idea (which I just used to TOTALLY overhaul my organizing system last night) is gold. You just knew the dude would pull out something astounding to grab significant pointage. What's next, a call from Brendan Shanahan to get the Maple Leafs in the playoffs?

smaier: +102
..Proper use of the honorific "SBD" in addressing me; obvious (yet not obsequious) brown-nosing pointing out my scribbles are "must reads"; and thoughtful questions with minimal potential to be mistaken as sarcasm (these will be answered in due time). A fine example for all the other children here has elevated her out of the pack. Indiana must be veritably beaming with pride!

BenFranklin1902: -10
..Post was a lengthy response to carabop. Appropriate when SHE starts handing out prize points. Otherwise...

vinman: -10
..Robert Goulet? Really? As above, when amsd starts handing out prize points, maybe. But otherwise...

THE REST 'O THE PACK: Less than +100
..A new category because I'm too lazy to think of something hilarious for everyone saying "hello, now what did I win?" I will still give some recognition for helpful comments where appropriate.

..samliu..Private message inquiring about China and PRC stamps. Gotta hand out something for the effort. Again, links to discussion threads here, or links elsewhere, for the education of myself and fellow StampOrama'ers may result in some additional pointage.
..philatelia..Kind offer to look through some Ireland scans for me in search of potential goodies. Low priority right now for me, but will definitely do so in a couple weeks.
..carabop..Nice comments, something about me in a dream I think. Really hoping this is not from some online lurker in a trench-coat having impure thoughts about me. That would just be creepy. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
..Winedrinker..Pretty close to breaking out of THE PACK with his post. Gotta love the capitalist instinct of someone who basically says "Get damichab to give you a bunch of info on expensive Aussie stamps. But if you find any, frig him and send me a private note so I can buy them first". God bless Donald Trump - God bless the USA!

Anonymous -2,598.3057
..Assigned to the Stamporama Community based on the view/reply ratio.
..Adjusted for "Likes" as suggested by another contender, rounded to the fourth decimal place.

""a gem""

As in gemstone or semi-valuable rock. My comment was more that as the person who put the pages together knew nothing about Australian stamps (besides the similarity in some pictures) to the effect that some stamps were wildly out of order, that something on other pages might be worth something.

But that is reliant on there being other Australian pages yet to be shown.

Very interested in how much random Australian you would get in hoard and whether our hard to get stamps are languishing in collections such as this. I very much suspect that Hoards of Australian stamps in Australia have been pre-picked as you tend to know what is valuable in your own country just as a Canadian would know what is rare in his.

Supreme Benevolent Dictator,

I confess to being one of the readers who didn't respond. Those who did reply seemed to offer astute observations and good advice, and I didn't have anything to contribute.

I do appreciate you posting "The Hoard" - it is always fun to see what others are working on. How lucky you were that he approached you before he threw away the whole collection.

Things I do wonder though:

1. Do you have you own room for stamps?

2. Do you have kids or pets who are helping you?

3. What will you come up with next?

4. How many nosy questions will you tolerate?

That being said, it is always entertaining to see what kind of "spin" you put on things. Your posts are always a "must read" for me.

This is just a quick and dirty list of some Australian stamps that I would be happy to have in a random selection or hoard such as yours. There are specific watermark combinations of stamps much more valuable but as guide for some things to look out for...

re: The Hoard .. The Feedback .. The Contest .. CHECK BACK HERE SOMETIMES - AND TAKE YOUR RITALIN

Your pictures and discussion about your hoard have been very interesting to me also your hoard has been too. I look at other people hoard of stamps and I start dreaming, it would be cool to have some of those stamps. I get pretty excited when I get any stamps and especially one that I don't have and can only dream about. Since becoming a member of SoR I have been able to acquire a few stamps that I didn't think I would ever get as soon as I did. Thanks to the peoples generosity or the affordable prices in auction or approvals. I will continue to look at other peoples hoards and wonder what I would ever do with that many stamps if I had them. I think I might just do like people who win all those big bucks on the lotto do and throw them all in the air and let them rain down one me. Still dreaming!

re: The Hoard .. The Feedback .. The Contest .. CHECK BACK HERE SOMETIMES - AND TAKE YOUR RITALIN

Cara, what I can offer is the thing they taught me when I went into sales... "Tell Everyone You Are In Real Estate!" I was brand new and I followed that advise... it led to my first two sales and listings from people I already knew!

The same principle applies to stamp collecting. Let everyone you know you are a stamp collector! There are hoards like this sitting in basements, attics and closets around the world that the current owner doesn't know what to do with! They realize it's too good to throw away, but they don't want it. They are out and out relieved to send it to the right place, much of the time for free!

A lot of my recent freebies have come from my other hobbies, classic and antique cars, and model car building. I regularly post car themed stamp things on the boards for those hobbies. Things like old covers mailed by long gone auto makers, stamps with cars on them and sometimes just cool stuff I share in their 'off topic' lounge like autographs on covers, old car dealer postcards, Zeppelins on cover and things like that. Collectors of anything usually appreciate other collectibles so people enjoy what I post.

But the important thing (at least for this post) is that everyone in that hobby knows I am a stamp collector! I wind up with a few interesting finds a year, always for free. If I can I reciprocate with a small item I think the will like. But this past year I've received pre-1910 postcards from three different people, some of them had been in their families since then! I got a small hoard of a deceased father in law's collection that filled two large trash bags, and right now I'm waiting on a parcel from Australia of a collection of Australian stamps he found in an old model car box!

re: The Hoard .. The Feedback .. The Contest .. CHECK BACK HERE SOMETIMES - AND TAKE YOUR RITALIN

I've really come into this in the middle. Happy

Can someone share a link to the start of this 'hoard' discussion? Part 1 still seems to be in the middle. Where did this come from? What's the goal? Are you breaking it down to sell it? Or going to make a consistent collection out of it, etc?

All I know is that by going through parts 1 and 2, I'm jealous and excited for you. Even if everything's the most common of commons, it would still be a lot of fun to organize all this. There looks like a lot of clean material there.

Mark

Update: Found it! Congrats on the find. I never thought of advertising on Kijiji for 'wanted to buy'. When I get home and repopulate my stamp budget I'll give it a try.

re: The Hoard .. The Feedback .. The Contest .. CHECK BACK HERE SOMETIMES - AND TAKE YOUR RITALIN

You ever get one of those challenges, like be the 14th to call ..... and the phone rings and rings and rings and.... and you figure, well, the manager is probably trying to find a polite way to extricate herself from the 12th caller, so I best hang on, so as not to lose, because I haven't heard Avi in the Morning announcing a winner, and "Leader of the Pack" is over and we've moved onto the news segment: Hoard on the Street. Wait, did I Hoar that correctly. I must have... anyway, I'm still waiting, maybe 13th is on the line with the station manager, and I've waited this long, I might as well wait.

So, what does one do?

It seems the guy running the contest has left for the day or is playing with the hoard, or, hell, maybe given up stamps completely. If I quit now, do I love my 80 point lead over Michael. He's gonna be busy, and you all see I got nothing but time on my hands. And what is it about auctioneers? Is it the contest that leads us to be in the lead? or Kizmet? Or guys who once lived in Dutchess County?

I've been checking back, just like the rather brief instructions indicated; certainly my OCD is raging in the red, with the needle maxed to right, just the tach on Goulet's pig.

Or was Avi expecting us to carry this on our own? Is this a twilight zone episode where the rules are completely different? Or....

my life, where's my life.....

It is a nice hoard and just like watching a new treasure find on some TV show, this is fun. It is a bit like 'lemaven' is doing this for all of us.

As for the 80 point lead... Do you know what the competition is for. I am not too clear on this myself. It is fun to be on the list though, regardless of any prize.

if you keep it to yourself Michael, I'll likely retain the lead, unless Avi values introspection and internal communications more highly; and given the amount of external commentary coming from him, that may indeed by the case.

re: The Hoard .. The Feedback .. The Contest .. CHECK BACK HERE SOMETIMES - AND TAKE YOUR RITALIN

Do NOT get on the SBD's last good nerve or penalty deductions may follow. I've had a rough few days (and I didn't realize what OCD/ADHD/Literalists you gang were). Ay caramba!

A client asked me to do a scientific paper on the psychology of procrastination a couple weeks ago but I got distracted by this thing and just realized I should...ah, frig it, I'll do it next week.

But seriously folks, life sometimes intrudes on stamps - like my University girl unexpectedly coming home ("Surprise, I'm here for 3 days, where's your car keys, can you get it detail-cleaned I'm driving a cute boy, I need $50, I'm a vegetarian now so please cancel your Sunday roast and get some tofu..."

Therefore,I've changed my (apparently misleading or overly-encouraging) Subject Line so quit yer durn bellyaching. I'll try to do an update tomorrow between some pesky (but actual money-making) client meetings.

G'Night and Cheers.

P.S. I have a few interesting finds I'll post in the appropriate forums as soon as I get a chance; and I think I'm going to throw some things on the auction block before the weekend.

re: The Hoard .. The Feedback .. The Contest .. CHECK BACK HERE SOMETIMES - AND TAKE YOUR RITALIN

Mark, in the blue bar at the top of the screen is a SEARCH link. Click on it, change the search filter to KEY WORD, enter HOARD and click on the SUBMIT button. Everything you seek should appear in full glory.
