My Copy of Kelleher's Collectors Connection arrived today. If you are not familiar with this magazine it is produced by Kelleher Auctions. I have received all their issues so far and read them cover to cover. It covers many areas of philately. Articles in this issue cover the history of early New York auction houses, Confederate States of America and The Distinction Between Local Posts, Carriers and Independent Mails and many other articles. The one that caught my attention was a story about Ayn Rand and Gimble's Stamp Department. I grew up and still reside in Philadelphia which had several large department stores downtown and Gimble's was one. It was a short el ride for me. I spent many days visiting their stamp department and a short walk across the street took me to the main post office where I could buy the recent commemorative stamps and check out the FBI wanted posters. It is an interesting article about Ayn Rand and how she became a stamp collector. I recommend you check out this magazine if you don't already receive it. I believe they also post on their web site.

re: Kelleher's Collectors Connection

You are absolutely correct, Vinman. I think it is a much better magazine to read than the AP, mainly because it is practically ad free. It is also very well presented and great reading. I just wonder how long they will continue to send it FREE, before asking for a prescription fee. I've never checked their auctions out, but should do that, after all, lookings free.

re: Kelleher's Collectors Connection

Hey Mike,
I had the same thought as you, when will they charge for it? I think I would pay for a hard copy to be able to hold while I'm reading. They do have it on their web site for free. I also bid in some of their auctions so maybe it would remain free for customers if they ever choose to charge a fee.
Another magazine that is a good read is the American Stamp Dealer and Collector. The AP magazine is just OK for me. I do find and article or two to read but not much more. While I talking about magazines I must mention La Posta, another good read that I look forward to reading. It is US postal history which I like to read about.

It is an excellent publication, and the price is certainly right. Let's not give them any ideas, Vince.

WOW!

That's an amazing result!

Congratulations to the production designer, editor, graphic artists, because ...

... KCC is packed with ads.

Volume One Number 2 Nov-Dec 2015 is at-hand.

Forty-eight (48) pages.

Full page ads on 2, 5, 7, 8, 19, 21, 35, 36, 42, 43, 47 (PSE), 48 (back cover).

Banner/footer ads for Kelleher on sixteen (16) pages.

And there are ads embedded in the content pages, eg, a pure-content full-page article on 'curiosities' ends with "We buy this material. Call us!"

So now the question becomes: if one out of four pages is a full-page ad, and one out of every three pages ends with a distinctive banner ad, and this reader thinks that the magazine is ad-free, are the creative people doing a great job or a terrible job?

Cheers,

"... when will they charge for it? ..."

That depends on how they are paying for it.

While I would not care to put a number on it, Kelleher has a pretty healthy print ad budget, worldwide.

Now, let's say that they want to up their visibility ... not much of a stretch, if you've been reading what they have been writing on the 'op-ed' pages of their new house organ.

They could buy more pages wherever they are buying pages now, and remain a hostage to the quality of the host publication, and continue to have little input or control over what editorial content appeared near their ads.

They could buy pages wherever they do not buy pages today - perhaps in a host of specialty journals - but that would require customizing the content & artwork of each ad to that host, and regularly updating those ads, and administering all of those relationships.

Or, they could wrap a magazine around their ads, and get complete editorial control over what ad goes where, and what goes next to each ad, and embed ads in the content, and pay for exactly as much quality as they like, etc.

If you've got the bank account, and you are already spending (what feels to you like) a small flood of money, that last option can look pretty good.

The interesting questions are not the enduser questions, eg, will they charge for it, what will they charge for it, who will they charge for it, etc ... because they might drop the whole thing ... or they might decide that this is a better way to get more & better Kelleher ads delivered to their public ... neither of which requires direct revenue from readers.

The interesting questions are the industry questions, eg, will they decide that they can cut back or drop their ad buy in my print publication, are there other firms large enough to follow suit, what will I do if I lose 4 pages of ads every month, etc.

Cheers,

I've been reading KCC cover-to-cover, and I find it entertaining.

That folks jumped-in with angst about the publication's business model & future suggests they feel the same.

Q/ Which presidential candidate do you most wish was reading KCC?

Smile, Vince!

I didn't reply with angst. I said I would pay for a copy if Kelleher decided to charge for it. I don't think that is angst. Sorry ikeyPikey, I won't take the bait.

I am intrigued enough to go look for this Kelleher magazine. And thanks for the angst -- which is my normal state anyway. Though I like to mix in a little Weltschmerz to round off my emotional state.

Cheers!

Many very good articles in every issue I have received. I have been getting this one since its inception.

The American Stamp Dealer and Collector and the KCC are both edited by Neil Print Media (Randy Neil is a former President of the APS). There are similarities between the layouts of both magazines.
