I'm not sure who it was who posted this suggestion, but let me know. I may have a gift for you if your idea works out...

Someone in another discussion said they widely broadcast their interest in stamps and that it sometimes leads to opportunities. Although it has lead to some embarrassing situations ("geek alert !"), I have started carrying some stamp tongs and a small glassine with a few interesting stamps on social occasions. I generally look for a chance to pretend I just found them in my pocket and explain how I've returned to my childhood stamp collection and my new-found passion for the hobby.

Last night my wife and I were out of town at a birthday dinner for her step-mother with a dozen people there. I went through my routine and lo and behold her cousin's boyfriend said "my uncle just died last month (at 84) and I found about 8 stamp albums crammed full. I think he just filled one and had to start on another. I'm not interested, and my aunt doesn't need the money, but she asked me to sell them for her and donate the money to the Cancer Society. I gave half to a local stamp club to take care of but you're welcome to the other half if you want. Keep them or sell them on eBay - just make whatever donation you think is appropriate".

After more discussion, a man at the next table came over. He was her step-mother's old principal out for his 92nd birthday. He said "I couldn't help but overhear. I've been a stamp collector since I was a kid but gave it up years ago. No one in my family is interested but you sounded so passionate I just asked my kids and they're ok with me giving you my collection so it's in the good hands of someone who appreciates it. Just have Cindy come over tomorrow to pick it up and please make a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in the name of my wife Gladys.

So, I haven't seen anything yet (probably won't until her family comes here in a couple weeks. But I'm super-stoked. I'll give you an update if/when something happens, but in the meantime...thanks for the great idea!

Cheers, Dave.

Well, I'll believe it when I see it. But how awesome would that circumstance be if there's even just common stuff.

But given how old the owners were, and that both came from fairly well-off families, so perhaps a semi-gem or two could be hoped for???
