Brian, I just read an article in a 2010 issue of "Stamp News - Australasia" that stated that if you add up all the individual stamps issued by Australia, Australia issues a new stamp every 1.4 days. It seems that since 2010, Australia is issuing even more stamps!

Wait till all the Olympic gold medal winners sheets come out,in one way I hope we don't win too many more medals.
Also they are not all issued for postage just to milk stamp collectors,as they issue printed labels for parcels
I will admit even I am guilty of buying some of their overpriced itemsBig Grin

...I believe that the Olympic medalists on stamps is a way to say how proud a country is of its Olympians!!! Alas some countries (Canada) only honour its winners after they have died.....

Outrageous that C is for crocs and camping. In Australia, C should be for cricket. (Despite their richly deserved trouncing at the hands of Sri Lanka!)

Randy, the US won 121 medals. I know the USPS is running a deficit again, but I don't want to help it into the black that much! They have issued enough stamps so far this year with more yet to come. Besides, four of those Olympic stamps will have the athletes in handcuffs.

Don't give Australia Post any ideas Rob,they produce enough stamps as it is and the international postage rates are going up again in October ,so that will be another expensive issue I expect.

Cannot make up my mind whether the red one is a porcupine, hedgehog or armadillo or just an animal hit by a circular saw.
The blue one presumably is depicting a Duck Billed Platypus or a Manatee though it could equally be road kill.
Agreed, not the best of stamps, was it a children's school project?

Hey Vic,
I think its an echidna. Which I believe is the lesser known of two egg laying mammals. Fascinating creature! Even more so than the platypus because he's primarily a land animal.

One is an Echidna and the other a Platypus, and I must agree they aren't the best of designs.

Hi Ernie

They are all succulents. The Tecticornia verrucosa is native to Australia. Although the plant on the stamp and aloe vera are both succulents, I have no idea whether they belong to the same family order.

And I admit, we do have very nice stamps.

Ok..this was driving me crazy. It turns out that Tecticornia verrucosa and aloe Vera are not closely related at all. They're both angiosperms (flowering plants). Angiosperms are the largest group of land plants. That's as close as they are related.

If you're talking about quantity, The Solomon Islands. Australia and France consistently round out the top three.

I like seeing the Australian new issues. They are usually well done. I just wish they didn't put out all the different formats of the same design like they do.

Hi Ernie

I'm doing well, and you? I'll have to find that episode of Star Trek; Australia issues a lot of interesting stamps...a lot, I think Australia Post is going overboard with new issues.

At one stage the amount issued in 2 months would have been 12 months worth.

If you google both and look at their scientific classifications, they only share the Kingdom classification and the next one descending. The angiosperm classification. They're related in a broad sense but from what I'm seeing not closely.

From a well known Australian Newsletter:

"Australia this week quietly issued all new stamps with TWELVE slits/cuts in each. Ridicuous and totally un-necessary vandalism.

eBay say they are about to cancel all stamp sales to Australia from overseas sellers. Amazon and Alibaba too. Amazing story."

He also quoted that Australia Post started issuing those stamps this month with twelve slits in them very much like the British Machin stamps.

You shouldn't believe everything you read. I have read the Stamp Bulletin for May-June & July-August and have collected all the June stamps and have seen the images in the July-August issue and I see no security slits on any of the stamps.

Unless you have seen one and can direct us to an image of such a stamp issued in June or soon to be issued in July-August.

Give AP time to get around to it. There are over 7,000 identified shipwrecks around Australia. We have already had a few shipwreck issues from Australia and Norfolk Island, and I'm sure that there will be more.

Brian

I am trying to keep up with the new issues from 2017 as Australia is the only country I will collect post 1970 (except UK which I collected until 1999). Can you recommend an outlet where I could still purchase these stamps at face value or close to face value. Unfortunately the Darwin Post Office has sold out of many of the issues. I am only interested in the gummed stamps not the SA.

Hi Richmond

I think the Sydney Philatelic Centre near the Queen Victoria building in the CBD sell stamps going back 6 months at face value. anything before that are sold by stamp dealers. I'll be going to the CBD today and will find out how far back they go and see if stamps prior to 6 months can be ordered.

One of our members asked me if I could purchase an Australian booklet only around one year old, found one at Adelaide Stampex last year dealer charged double face value.
If you get the Philatelic Bulletin it lists the new issues and their withdrawal dates, but only for the FDC's.
I found stamps on display at a post office and thought I'll get them ,I took them to the counter the girl scanned them and said sorry you can't have them the have been withdrawn.
On the 2nd of Oct Australia Post issued a new concession NV stamp these cost pensioners 60 cents each ,only thing is at the moment it appears you have got to pay $1-00 each as you can see from the booklet.
I inquired at the post office today and they were telling me they were having problems scanning them?

Cannot make up my mind whether the red one is a porcupine, hedgehog or armadillo or just an animal hit by a circular saw.
The blue one presumably is depicting a Duck Billed Platypus or a Manatee though it could equally be road kill.
Agreed, not the best of stamps, was it a children's school project?

Hi Ernie

They are all succulents. The Tecticornia verrucosa is native to Australia. Although the plant on the stamp and aloe vera are both succulents, I have no idea whether they belong to the same family order.

And I admit, we do have very nice stamps.

Hey Rob, Hope you've been doing well. "Duh!" they are all succulents. I missed that. They're all really neat but that first one looks like something off the set of the original Star Trek. Wild!

I think as far as new issues are concerned, Australia is at or near the top of the list.

They're related in a broad sense but from what I'm seeing not closely.

eBay say they are about to cancel all stamp sales to Australia from overseas sellers.

I am only interested in the gummed stamps not the SA.

re: Australian New Issues Part V

Hi Richmond

I think the Sydney Philatelic Centre near the Queen Victoria building in the CBD sell stamps going back 6 months at face value. anything before that are sold by stamp dealers. I'll be going to the CBD today and will find out how far back they go and see if stamps prior to 6 months can be ordered.

re: Australian New Issues Part V

Hi Richmond

Spoke to the person in charge of the Philatelic section of the Post Office and he said they have most of the issues from February onwards, but they won’t last very long.

re: Australian New Issues Part V

Are these alphabet stamps going to lead to pages with hidden messages?
