My choice would be the lower one, it just looks to have cleaner lines.
Hi Angore;
Avery labels, are not intended for long term use. They will fall off your binders in a very few years, and worse, they will leave behind dried out adhesive that is very difficult to remove, even with solvents.
The picture you show looks like a nice quality binder, so I would not recommend Avery at all.
If you just applied them and want to remove your experiment to replace with something better they should come off easily. You may have to clean off some adhesive tho...the trick here is to pull very slowly at them.
The problem is that Avery is a company that makes mailing and other use labels for the office. These items are used in the office mostly for mailing and are considered temporary. I have seen file folders with the labels falling off.
Years ago I discovered a permanent means of marking things. I was making do-it-yourself amateur radio receivers and other electronics test gear. I used this method for labeling the controls for the front panels.
It is called dri-transfer lettering. It is available in art stores and electronic supply houses. It is a wax like material that is placed against the item and rubbed with a burnisher. Later you spray a clear-coat over the results. Then the color will match the binder so good that you will swear that the binders were stamped by the manufacturer.
When I used them for electronics, they would get rubbed by my fingers lightly every time I turned a rotary switch or other control knob. However they never wore off. If you have a beat up old binder, or just a cheap binder laying around, you can try this stuff out on them. Be sure to test the clear-coat on the back of a Vario binder, to be sure it is chemically compatible with that type of material.
Just sortin things out....

TuskenRaider,
Yes I am aware of the lack of permanence of the Avery labels on most surfaces and actually consider it a requirement. I want to be relabel in the future as needs or preferences change.
I am willing to reprint later if necessary.
I have done some long term testing on various binders:
Mystic Heirloom - must be some leaching from plastic as label deteriorates fairly quickly on some binders
Avery Heavy Duty Binder - no issues, good adhesion but can remove cleanly
Vario stock sheets - seems permanent, cannot remove cleanly
Lighthouse Grande - in test
I use these binders, which I can make my own labels and insert/change/remove whenever I want.
Hi Everyone;
Hey Angore, thanks for sharing your test results with the group, that's how we all learn.
ChrisW, Kudos...those look even better that my dri-transfer stuff!!

Check out the options at Staples. There are self adhesive label holders that you can put paper inserts inside. Several different options here.
I also have the We R Memory Keeper binders like ChrisW and labeling those is on the list too.
I was experimenting with creating some nice labels for my Vario binders.
I used standard Burgundy color for background but the result did not match the Vario "Burgundy". I was doing some experimenting and it needs more green (so brown) to match the binder.
These were printed on Avery 5436 labels (removeable- from most surfaces) on a color laser printer. I cannot decide if I like normal or bold but likely need to make text smaller to match countries that take two lines.
