Collecting one stamp for each of the 1.5 Million children murdered in The Holocaust.

Happy New Year to all.

We just received a nice batch of stamps from Stamporama member Jules Jelev ("cougar"). Thanks!

Another donor had asked about our progress in getting this "newly international" project off the ground, so I wanted to share our response to this.

The Holocaust Stamps Project is "officially open", but we still have lots of things to finalize.

David's daughter set up a website when she was home for the holiday break, but we need to do more work on it before "going public". And our Canadian school system seems to be a bit more "conservative" in embracing the project. Every school we have contacted loves the concept, but are hesitant to be THE SINGULAR focus of this initiative (mostly concerned about not being able to live up to it).

We are starting to think this may be a multiple-school project (David has recently talked to friends associated with the local Hebrew Day School and the Islamic School), as well as incorporating other organizations such as senior's homes and community organizations. We are also looking at tying in sponsors both in Sarnia (where I work, and David is a private consultant to our firm 3-4 days a week) and in London (where David lives, about 90 minutes away). So there is a heavy investment of time right now to put this in place.

It's early days, and we have only a few donations so far, so we don't have much to work with in terms of stamp volumes anyway. So we aren't overly concerned about having a specific "single school sponsor" yet. It will all fall into place when we get more of a buzz out there, so we continue to explore options.

In the meantime, we appreciate your continued interest and consideration.

All the best, Craig.

re: Holocaust Stamps Project (Canada) - January 2018 Update - Late-Breaking Update

Dennis,

it looks like Craig and Dave may give more details elsewhere, and the project has morphed from a US-based one to a Canadian-based one. But it started in Foxboro Mass charter school, where they collected 11 million stamps for each of the people killed in the Holocaust. They then used those very stamps to create mosaics commemorating those people. The project was wonderful on so many fronts, bringing the holocaust into clearer focus, teaching the kids about it, and allowing them to memoralize those who died. Thank you cards feature one of the mosaics created in the project.

I especially appreciate that the project crossed lines and included all those the Nazis found unworthy, including the infirm, Roma, homosexuals, and more.

David

re: Holocaust Stamps Project (Canada) - January 2018 Update - Late-Breaking Update

I previously donated to the US project over the last few years. I will try to put together smaller 2 ounce envelopes with stamps and send them in as I accumulate them. I rather keep the envelopes under the 2 ounce - to avoid any issues with custom forms - so I can just drop them in the mail as I accumulate them. I was wondering what to do with so many common extras I have from old approval books - that are just not worth my time to recycle thru new books here anyway. Most of my stamps will be prior to 1970 - I am sure that does not matter... Steve

re: Holocaust Stamps Project (Canada) - January 2018 Update - Late-Breaking Update

Thanks for the positive comments David ("amsd") and Steve ("cardstamp")

This is a great project that Charlotte Sheer ("csheer") initiated in 2009 (search for her SOR posts to get a better background) with the support of Jamie Droste from the Foxborough Regional Charter School. As David mentioned, The Holocaust was significantly - but not exclusively - a Jewish issue. The project is focused on a broader issue of tolerance and respect for diversity - and a call-out against bullying (or worse) behaviour against those who are deemed to be "different".

Once Charlotte & Jamie achieved their unbelievable objective in late-2017 of 11 Million stamps collected (many used to create collages/mosaics honouring holocaust victims and survivors) the project was concluded. But I couldn't think of this being the end, hence the "international" expansion to Canada (assisted by my colleague Craig Allen). I hope to one day pass the torch to someone in Europe, Asia, or Africa to continue Charlotte's vision even further. (Notwithstanding the ever more punishing costs of shipping stamps out of country!)

Like Steve, I find that I have way more stamps than I can possibly sell or give away. So The Holocaust Stamps Project is a great venue for those "extras" (whether sound or damaged) that otherwise just take up space and time. For example, as I have been organizing my Canada to sell on SOR lately, I have found it quite liberating to be ruthless in throwing common stamps, or those just with crappy cancels, into my HSPC bucket.

Hope everyone enjoys this Superbowl Weekend. Go Steelers!!! (Oops, we're out...) OK, let's just see an exciting game!

Cheers, Dave.

Hey Liz. Craig is down with the flu so I'll answer for him.

Yes, we are "still" accepting donations - in fact, we've barely started! And please do use the mailing address shown in the pictures. It should also be on Craig's personal info in the Membership listing.

FYI - Craig is a sub-agent of my key client, who is located in Sarnia Ontario (about an hour away from my home in London, and 15 minutes across the bridge to Port Huron, Michigan). We should have a U.S. mailing address confirmed soon for U.S. based donors who may find that more convenient.

Because I am actively involved with collecting and SOR, Craig has agreed to help me (and to maintain a "Chinese Wall" of sorts) with receiving and organizing donated stamps in his Sarnia office, and maintaining the communications with Stamporama members.

Thanks for your support!

Thanks Dave;

Tell Craig to take it easy. The flu this year is a nasty one. I just spend close to a month in the hospital and it was full of people with the flu, pneumonia and other respiratory problems.

I will start to prepare of box of stamps for your program. Will you accept both on and off paper with duplication? I have so many stamps to dispose of and do not want the stamps to land up in a recycling bin if they can be put to some use.

re: Holocaust Stamps Project (Canada) - January 2018 Update - Late-Breaking Update

Thanks Liz.

We accept ALL stamps - on or off paper - including damaged stamps. This is an important part of our messaging: one stamp represents one person "thrown away" in the Holocaust - considered to have "no value" because of their difference from the desired "state norm" or perceived imperfections. In fact, we'll even accept CTOs!!!

Don't worry about separating on/off paper if it is too time consuming. That is one of our projects, as many on-paper may need to be trimmed as they are counted (helps make them more useful for creating collages, etc when we get to that point). Duplications are also fine as we will also have a project (when we get to critical mass) to separate by common colors needed for the collages.

Here's an image from the original Holocaust Stamp Project, founded by our very own Charlotte Sheer ("csheer") of various collages that were used to create unique greeting cards. Quite amazing I'd say! We're light-years away from that but continuing to take baby steps, so your support is appreciated.

Dave & Craig

Yesterday afternoon I mailed a 7+ kg box of on-paper and off paper mixtures. Most of the stamps have been sorted by country and placed into Ziploc bags. The box should arrive by Expedited Parcel in Sarnia by Friday or Monday of next week at the latest.

Feel free to do whatever you want with the stamps enclosed in the box. I believe most of the bags had the damaged stamps removed when I originally sorted them. If some of the stamps can be sold to purchase supplies you will require for your project please do so.

I'll defer on the selling of any stamps until I can consult with Charlotte about how she handled such "permissions" since our basic tenet is that they won't be sold (so donors know that their donations aren't possibly enriching someone personally). I'll get back to you through a PM.
