Thanks Roy and Don for the quick response.
Another question now. Does the prefix codes apply to foreign postage as well as the US; or, are there different codes used for the foreign postage?
Gary
Yes, the prefixes are consistent across foreign countries. The page illustrated by 51Studebaker above comes from the US Specialized catalog and includes many more categories that Scott does not cover for foreign stamps, particularly revenue uses.
There are also prefixes, particularly in Occupation issues like 9N (Berlin)
Also thought of a couple more:
N: Newspaper
RA: Postal Tax
MR: War Tax
EO: Official Special Delivery
M: Military
Roy
There are many more that are in combinations of all the letters. Just remember the primary letters for a stamp service type, then you will be able to decipher them, such as:
RAC = air post postal tax
RAJ = postal tax postage due
CO = air post official
CBM = air poat semi-postal
A = pre-postage
AR = postal fiscal
L = local
and even more...
If you have a Scott catalog, look through it. There is plenty of information contained in it. The more you use the catalog, the easier it will become. But watch out! You will also find the inconsistencies in the catalog numbering system. (That will change after I buy Scott!)
sniff, sniff, sniffle
my poor forgotten WX for Christmas seals
The WX is shown on the page scan from the US Specialized.
What are the prefix codes that Scott uses to classify the category a stamp belongs in?
I don't have a copy of their guide but I do know that a number without a prefix code is regular postage and the "C" prefix stand for airmail postage.
Thanks everyone for your help on this request.
