I just joined the Europa Study Unit. I am collecting the common design Europa stamps.

That includes: 1956, 1958-1973, 1984, 2000 and 2016.

Looks like a lot of fun!

I know nothing about this collecting theme but why not 1957? Did they not issue stamps that year?

Europa or CEPT.
I collect Europa through 2000.I collect Europa related (per the Michel catalog list which includes affinity stamps, Efta, Nato and Nordic plus any precursors to CEPT such as Marshall plan, Europe Coal & Steel, and Council of Europe.
There are plenty of Europa related study groups, associations and website with lots of details...including an official one from Europe's stamp coordination committee listing all issues, common issues, themes and future themes as well.

FYI, I collect Mint, Used and FDC, plus S/S or Sheets (Monaco and Portugal can set you back a few pennies!).
Used stamps are harder to get than Mint, especially for the more recent ones. Apart from a few specialty rare issues (Luxembourg 1957-58 etc...) most stamps are readily available and don't cost much. Have fun.

As mentioned before, my collection is housed in 26 Binders!!

They did. But these are the years that they used a common design. I am only collecting the common design issues.

I started collecting the Common design set in,
when available, postally used condition.
Quite a few are simply not often available
postally used in worthwhile condition,
so I had to compromise and acquire a few mint
as well as some that I removed from FDCs.
I even had one seller convert clunky FDCs
to closely cropped issues that cost less
to mail from the UK to the USA, where
I could soak and remove them from the corners.

re: Starting A New Collection

Like my boy gggrrraphy, I also collect Europa up to year 2000.

However, apart from setting up some album pages for each year, I have just been putting everything into a file drawer to sort through "if/when" I get a chance (along with my Soccer and Olympics topical collections).

I seem to have mostly postally-used (as far as I can tell) but would have to take time to tell for sure.

I think it would be perfect if Gilly set up a group email for those of us in the game, and we can use this as a conduit for trading/selling/etc. Personally, I am just interested in the stamps, and not overly pedantic about the Mint vs Postal vs CTO issue. So I'm amenable to trading quid-pro-quo based on CV.

Back to you Mr. Giles!

Dave.
