With 650+ posts on "Smithsonian Stamp For Every Country..." and 4,200+ posts on "A Stamp For Every Country..." I was getting confused, so I figured it was time to start a new/related topic.

In preparing to post some new Auctions/Approvals, I went through my U.N. hoard and found what I thought were just flag labels (like the ones you got with certain albums back in the day). Luckily I Googled them before tossing them, and found they were actual stamps. Here's a description, and one of the pages I have.

"Since 1980, the U.N. Postal Administration has honored each member country with a stamp depicting that nation's flag. The UNPA issued 16 flag stamps a year until 1989. The series was halted temporarily when all members had been commemorated on a stamp. The UNPA resumed the series in 1997. The complete issue to date now includes 184 issues."

There is lots of debate about how to organize/collect around this topic and the Smithsonian album. I figure "to each his own" but after reviewing the comments and examples, I like the idea (for myself) of:

A full page for each country, rather than trying to jam multiple countries on one page; with the UN flag stamp in the header.

A brief description of the country and its (postal and other) history - including predecessor countries and examples of their stamps. Just a name and a single stamp seem rather boring and uninformative.

A #1 stamp where possible.

Some other relevant written history reflected in stamps that tell the story of the country. For example, I was looking at Hungary today - a country I generally had no interest in collecting - but found it fascinating that it evolved from part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire pre-WWI; to a Republic separated from Austria, a Soviet Republic, and a Kingdom ruled by a regent - all within a couple years of WWI; at the same time, forced to give up about 70% of its territory to Czechoslovakia, Romania, Italy, Yugoslavia, and other interests. And then in WWII, bringing back some territories, only to lose them again and being taken over by the Soviet Union.

I'm going to work on a couple countries over the next few weeks, and will post some examples of what I am thinking of putting together for comment. Hopefully, this may get some other people interested in this collecting area, and sharing both formatting ideas and trading relevant stamps.

Dave.

Looks like a good base to start a modern, current collection based on countries existing today.
