re: questions about these 2 One Penny Kangaroo Stamps

The postmark is an excellent strike of a Travelling Post Office (railway). Collectable but not rare.

The other stamp has the "white flaw left of Tasmania" commonly known as the Two Tasmanias flaw. With a retail between $150-$300, that's a nice thing to have.

May I suggest high resolution scans of individual stamps?

Thankyou, With the travelling post office one, the word down mean they are coming back from somewhere?? Just like the Koala up the tree stamp and also the 2 Tasmania stamps both were found with other stamps. I suppose lucky me as I wasn't expecting anything from the stamps that I bought.

Thankyou

The DOWN indicates that the train was travelling away from Melbourne to the country. TPO 16 was used on the North Gippsland Line (Eastern Victoria).

This is approximately the route

In general railway terminology "up" trains travel toward the capital of the country state or headquarters of the railway company while "down" trains run away from same. Of course cross- country trains have their own up and down where knowledge of the companies operations is necessary. All rail operators operating instruction will tell you which direction is up and down on any particular route.

This is why in the UK you always travel "up" to London even when your starting point is "up" on the map. Of course of us from the North insist that we go "down" to London - just to be awkward !!
