I remember there were similar promotion actions in the Netherlands too. I was just a small boy back then, but remember getting beautiful colourful stamps from Hungary and Yemen at the gas station.
Looking back at it, and seeing the ones on your "Tauschkarte", they were all stamps one could only give away... Nevertheless, those were the days.
APS gets donations of stamps and now do not want to accept common material. One would think they could accept these donations and give them away as membership perks or resell for modest expense.
Al, the APS has tons of common stamps. Dealers have tons of the stuff as well. They did give them away at shows, and put them in one cent buckets at shows. There is just so much of that stuff out there that it has flooded the market, and hardly anyone wants it. With little to no replacement collectors coming around, common stamps are turning into nothing much more than kindling or something for the landfill.
Regarding freebies, I remember buying packs of pencils, and getting a few free stamps of East German stamps in the pack.
I have been a member for years and they never once offered anything like this. A beginner has nothing and they would not know if common or not. You see some going through a pile on a table at show but not a large number.
How about making up packets for elementary school teachers to give students instead of gold stars? Hmmmm I should do that with some of my excess Japan!
I am currently giving my excess stamps to a senior living facility. In the past, I have made up small packets of stamps and tossed them in with candy during Halloween.
During the 1970s I operated an auto repair shop at he local Shell gas station and we gave away steak knives, various juice and drink Glasses with the NFL helmets decorating the sides, and one year, trays with all the (Then) helmet emblems, for each team, usually with a "fill-up" or an oil change. there were other giveaways, but the memory falters.
It is hard sometimes to look back and think of those years as the "good old days".
Opa, I’m American but I lived in Pirmasens from1969-72. I remember getting stamp packets at the gas station!
In the '70's (U.K.) we used to collect ice lolly wrappers and then send off a certain amount for a packet of stamps. We used to check around beaches etc to collect extra ones that people had thrown away, just making sure we avoided the wasps.
I am cleaning out some boxes of "Look at it later", when I found this old stock card from Germany.
The service station was giving away worldwide stamps every time you purchased 20 liters or more. You could also buy a stamp Album for DM 1.50. It goes on to say let someone else who doesn't collect pick up stamps for you. The good old days. I have not been able to find out any information about the year yet but I could imagine the 70".
Sure would be great if some store etc. would do this today. Probably not enough collectors around anymore.
