This is such a fascinating little historical story! Difficult to imagine what life must have been like for the sailors trapped in the Great Bitter Lake.
Indeed Penelope, a charming slice of history somehow recaptured. With equally charming stamps.

It is hot as Hades and when the sand blows it peels paint from the bulkheads. even when moving through the the vessels go so slow there is barely a breeze created by their motion.

Exceptional presentation produced by 99% Invisible on the history of the GBLA and its stamps. I have a bit part in the podcast as the stamp collector who "stumbles upon" a GBLA stamp on eBay. Forgive the non-exact definition of philately - I can never go with "the love of tax free." (The final portion of the podcast talks of the Nicaraguan stamp that convinced the U.S. to build the Panama Canal in Panama, and not Nicaragua.)
Odd tale of a floating city of ships stranded in the Great Bitter Lake portion of the Suez Canal.
Cheers
Eric
