I'm using Clive's marvelous AlbumEasy program to print album pages. Good paper isn't that easy to find here in Thailand, but a couple of years ago I bought some stock of Indonesian made 120gm A4 acid free pages. The most popular stock books made here use black stock sheets inside clear sleeves for a 3-ring binder with slip boxes. These sleeves are American letter size. My plan is to insert two album pages into these sleeves back to back. By trimming 24mm off the bottom of my printed album pages my A4 pages will fit nicely to give a double sided display when opened.
I will use Hawid stamp mounts as I have some old stock of these in various sizes from 30 years ago. My last use of stamp mounts was transparent ones to go in my SG Windsor GB albums. Most of stock of mounts are black. So here's my questions.
With the transparent mounts the printed frames around each stamp are visible and rather attractive. With black mounts does the mount really do the job of the printed frame? They do supply the contrast to most stamps. Should I still design the pages to have a printed frame visible outside of the mount or can I cover them with the mount? Should I wait until things are normal again and splash out on transparent mounts if I have enough money left? So many questions, but below are examples which make more sense of what I am writing.

p.s. Ignore the stamp in the second scan, it's just a placeholder while I get the sizes and design right. Thanks again to Clive as I know I can change the frame sizes when I make the decision.

I'm worried I wasn't as clear as I wanted to be. Here's the question simplified a bit.
Would it look better if I have a printed frame running outside of the black stamp mount?

Thanks Charlie. That's what I need. I will start with getting the mount size correct and then add a few mm on all sides to the frame.

When I want to try some comparison, I make several pages of mock ups. Some like borders around stamps (with or without mounts) and some do not. If you use Steiner pages and use black mounts, you usually do not see the printed borders.

I used black mounts for many years before switching to clear. I did it because I looked the clean look of the page, fewer issues with improper cutting, placement,and fewer mount sizes.

I also started with black mounts, but then I used black quadrilles paper. That was back in the 70's though!
Now I use clear mounts and coloured cardstock, printed on both sides, mostly green, some orange. Using clear mounts with the coloured paper makes the stamps pop. Using white or cream, they blend in to the paper instead.

Al my problem will be I have no idea how long it will be before I can stock up on clear mounts. International post has been stopped and the local suppliers have shut for the duration.
Pete the idea of coloured stock is attractive, but again I'm a bit stuck with what I have. I would hate to waste this time I now have. In recent years one trip into town or just shopping seems to end up costing me the day. Now I'm hardly getting out past the garden.

Well then, you make do with what you have.
You can always experiment with other stuff later!
Maybe have thicker borders on the stamp outlines so that there won't end up being any white space between the two.

Or... just have a line printed on the page where you want to place the stamp. Save on ink that way!

I prefer it without a frame, but i could go either way on that question.

I think I will go with this. I actually took all bar two of the mounts off a page I made years ago. It appealed to my innate sense of laziness. Again the stamps are placeholders for now until I check my stock and clean those I want to use. I probably should have trimmed the tops of the mounts for the first four smaller stamps.

Well I finally got moving all be it very slowly. Just a couple of examples and many thanks to Clive and his AlbumEasy software.
Had the lid off the scanner hence the shadows. Two pages back to back in a local album sleeve. A4 acid free paper with 24mm cut off the bottom.

A thought on using black or clear mounts. If you using album software that prints inside the frame where the mount will be stuck and you are using an inkjet printer, the moisture on the sticky side of the mount can cause the print to run. It would look messy on clear mounts in spaces where no stamp is sitting. Luckily for me the black mounts I had to use hide this.

I've never licked the entire back-side of the mount. I only lick a small portion at the bottom, so I have never experienced this. Stamps mounted in this fashion have stayed put for over 40 years!

These pages look great Danny.
It all comes down to what looks good to you. I use a combination of Steiner pages and pages that I made using AlbumEasy. I actually like the AlbumEasy pages better because I can get each page exactly the way I want it. The Steiner pages save a lot of time though.

Pete I have been using a cotton bud to moisten the middle of the mount. That makes it easier to remove and reuse the mount if I decide to scrap the page a make another. I'm a ditherer and can decide a change is needed a bit to often.

I used to like frame lines around the whole page, but I learned that some covers I wanted to display were too large and covered up the frame lines. Since then, not frame lines!

Our virus lockdown has coincided with my hope of semi-retirement also becoming a reality.I'm not taking on new work except for those authors I already publish. I figured it was time to stop being a hoarder and become a stamp collector. The last few years I have just popped new material into stock books so it's not as bad as it could have been, although I still have quite a few piles of unsorted stamps, but that's future sorting enjoyment.

These pages look great Danny.
It all comes down to what looks good to you. I use a combination of Steiner pages and pages that I made using AlbumEasy. I actually like the AlbumEasy pages better because I can get each page exactly the way I want it. The Steiner pages save a lot of time though.
