I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

The closest I can get to is Scott #55. However #55 is 6p, while this stamp is 2p and color is different. The catch is the advertisement on the back of the stamp. I first thought that it was an imprint from the envelope that the stamp was on, but the writing is correct and not backwards as would be if it was lifted from the envelope.

I have one other with a different advertisement, but it is also correct and not backwards.

Any help appreciated.

Looks like #62 to me.

Scott's has this... "In 1893 advertisements were printed on the backs of Nos. 61-67, 68-69."

re: New Zealand Mystery

Maybe this will help or muddy the waters.
SG Commonwealth lists for 1882-1900, paper with horizontal mesh perf 12x11.5.w.12a (6mm gap to star)
For 1888-95, Vert mesh paper perf 12x11.5. w 12b (7mm gap to star)
1888-91 compound perf 12 and 12.5 w 12b.
1891-3 mixed perfs 12x11.5 and 12.5.w 12b
1890 vert mesh perf 12x11.5 w 12c (4mm gap to star.)
1890 as above but perf 12.5.1891-4 vert mesh perf compound 10 and 12.5 W12b.
1891-95 as above perf 10.
1895-97 as above perf 10 and 11 plus mixed perfs 10 and 12.
1895-1900 as above perf 11.
There are various dies to complicate matters but the adverts appeared 1893.
If the watermark is a double lined star then it is the 1900 issue on thick soft paper.
Guess it is watermark and paper/mesh id first.
The earlier stamps were Lilac to lilac purple and later purple.

Well D'Oh

And on top of that, it was all on the same page. Just didn't look far enough.

Thanks a bunch Mr. BrightonPete.

Victor,

We must have been typing at the same time. Just now saw your posting and now I have a headache. Thank you for your input, but believe I will place my 2 stamps in my strange file.

re: New Zealand Mystery

No worries, took me a while to type it out, would have scanned the pages but the catalogue is rather thick for the scanner.
