I'm not sure but I think I may have just ruined a rare stamp and I'm a little afraid to know for sure. ( It had a sideways watermark). And overprint and was a beautiful stamp.

As you can see here where my problem began. I ran out of watermark fluid so I tried to use something else. Unbelievable.

Then: I came up with the bright idea to just dip the edge and clean it up. Well..

It sucked up the solvent and got worst. Now look.

I sure hope it wasn't real rare.

Ok now I'm concerned. I did more research and its suppose to be the winged foot or stars. This is definitely strange. It's a crown. What in the world ????

A crown ? And notice the sideways orientation.

Update. These stamps were produced in 1935 the overprint was added in the 40s. So yes the crown would be correct. It was originally the crown then in 1945 the winged foot. All good. Sheww

re: Has anyone ever ruined what they thought might have been a rare stamp ?

I have no idea about the stamp in question, but years ago, on holidays in the Okanagan area of British Columbia, I bought a beautiful XF used copy of Canada #152, the 4-cent ochre from the 1929 Scroll issue. As soon as we arrived home and unpacked, on a warm summer day, I got out my Canada album and prepared to mount the stamp. A warm breeze came through a window and lifted the stamp off the table and onto the floor. I couldn't see it on the floor, pushed my chair back, stood up and took a step right onto the stamp, although I didn't realize what I had done until the next step. Then I saw the stamp, picked it up, and my heart sank. The stamp had fallen onto a tiny, rough pebble, and my shoe had forced the pebble right through King George V's face, leaving behind a very visible hole. Surprise

re: Has anyone ever ruined what they thought might have been a rare stamp ?

It is a Postage Due Stamp of italy overprinted with Fascist Axe
Watermark #140 perf 14 from the Italian Social Republic released in 1944.

The overprint comes from the symbol of fascism which is the“fasces”.
The “fasces is an ancient Roman symbol of power carried by lictors in front of magistrates.
It was a bundle of sticks featuring an axe, indicating the power over life and
death.
Before the Italian fascists adopted the fasces, the symbol had been used by Italian political organizations of various political ideologies (ranging from socialist to
nationalist), called Fascio ("leagues") as a symbol of strength through unity.
This symbol is often used for justice, as indicated by the US Administrative office of the courts.

The Italian Social Republic was active from late 1943 till early 1945

Back when I was a teen I was cleaning up my desk. I tore an old envelope in half and as I tossed it in the waste basket I had a sinking feeling. Sure enough I had put my best old 1920s first day cover in it for safe keeping! Yup, tore it in half!

re: Has anyone ever ruined what they thought might have been a rare stamp ?

I related this story before about ten years ago, but whenever
I show someone the saved copy, it gets a laugh, so I have
corrected some typos, allowed for the passing years and the sad
fact that my friend, high school classmate, and one time prom
date, Phyliss, the original recipient passed away a few years
.ago.

The Blue Four Skilling

"I recently sent a letter to a friend and had used a special
stamp for the postage on the envelope that I thought would
relate to her other interests. A few weeks later she wrote
to say that she had received the letter and three 29 cent
Garden Flower stamps I had used on her envelope were quite
nice. She also said that she showed them to her daughter
and her little granddaughter saying that she was going
to save them.
Shortly thereafter her grand daughter brought her the stamps
that she had been going to put away, cut through with a
scissor as the child tried to "Save them for Nana".

"I wrote her a further note and used three more from a long
strip that had bee lying about my stamp desk telling her this
tale of the "Norwegian Blue Four Skilling."

".... Dear Phyllis,
I am glad you got the letter I sent and certainly understand
the difficulties that a well meaning grand child can create.
The stamps themselves are not any great value and I've used
a strip. I get things like that when I attend one of our
stamp club meetings
"Your experience reminds me of an incident that occurred
while we were still living in New York about 1974. My oldest
daughter, Mary, was about three or four and very helpful. I
had quite a stamp collection even then, and had acquired
several early Norwegian stamps. They were from the 1860s or
1870s and denominated in "Skillings" which was the currency
in Norway before they changed it to "Ore" around the turn of
the century.
Mary had, of course, seen me remove stamps from the paper
remainders of envelopes by soaking them in water."

A beautiful pair of the blue four skillings

"One of the nicest was a four skilling blue that had been
used in 1872 or thereabouts and it was the prize of a group
of some ten or twelve similar stamps. One evening after
arriving home from work I went to the bathroom to do what
had to be done and take a shower. As I sat there quietly
contemplating some vacuous thought, I spied my treasured
four skilling blue on the floor along with several other
Norwegian stamps. Before I could react, or act at all, for
that matter, and while a guttural scream was but forming
in the best Bosun's mate's tradition in the pit of my lungs,
little Mary (Who is still alive I will add lest you become
fearful of the outcome of this adventure)
entered the room
and told me that she had washed some stamps for me that day."

"I gathered strength by pausing and finally asked, Where did
you do that sweetheart?", fearing the answer and knowing that
it was already to late to prevent the obvious. "In the bowl"
the little angel replied with that helpful smile that protects
infants from the mayhem that would be due them were they just
a wee bit older."
.
"Here are some of them " she added and I accepted the gift
of love with all the grace and class that I could muster. She
also looked around and found several more off to the side. So
what had been a group of ten or twelve, ( I do not like to
dwell on the exact number originally there)
became a group
of eight that were salvageable with one that was slightly torn
and had to be discarded. I remember carefully placing the
survivors of their trip on the SS Tidy Bowl to the side to be
rewashed and eventually I took a long , long, cold shower."
.
"I still have them and when ever I look at the page where they
have resided for all these years I think of this and remind
myself to put the damn stamps away when I am through with them."

Thanks for sharing that.

Ok well it appears lightning can strike twice..

Just received this and tried to remove it from the wonderful hand made holder. But unfortunately the tape got placed a little too far over and stuck to the stamp as you can see. And how in the world was I suppose to know ?

I got a little upset at first but now I am over it and able to laugh about it. Thanks Perfect timing.

Thank goodness I didn't have to pay alot for it. But it's not really the money it's the stamp getting torn that hurt the most.

So now my plan is to soak it and hopefully repair it. Kind of reminds me of life.

Have a good weekend all.
