General Philatelic/Gen. Discussion : Do you keep the souvenir sheet AND the individual stamps?

As I'm organizing my Germany collection I have found a number of cases where I had individual stamps from a S/S (some Used, some Mint) mounted in my album - but then came across the actual S/S.

As I add S/Ss to my albums (I haven't done so before) I'm debating whether to:
1) Also keep the individual stamps
2) Sell the individual stamps to buy other S/Ss I need.

Thoughts? What do YOU do?

Cheers, Dave.

I keep the whole mint SS and a postally used singles version of the SS stamp. Trade or sell the mint singles.

For my Guyana and Israel collection I collect the sheets and the individual stamps mint and used, for most others just the used in both sheets and/or individual as I can get.

when I have copies of the SS, i deacquisition the singles; on covers, it's much harder to find SS, so singles are often the only option. But IF i have the SS, that's what i'll keep

It depends on the prices of the items, and the importance of the collection in my priority list. I generally on principle try to keep both, but I will not buy a S/S to break it up for the stamps. Some albums have spaces for both S/S and stamps and others do not... in which case, if I plan to collect both, I will create a page for both stamps and S/S side by side.

Hi dave,

If you get modern 2000 and newer singles from a SS that are actually postaly used from Germany then keep them. Some of the modern stamps postally used are getting very hard to find. Most people here use the self adhesive stamps or difinatives that can be bought at various small stores.

Another thing is, how many people buy SS and then rip them apart to use as postage. I don´t. Our small post office here ussually won´t have them anyway.

Awesome ideas, thanks! I'm starting to develop a strategy for approaching this, so keep those ideas coming!

Dave.

P.S. I discovered today that sometimes the "same" stamps on a S/S (but with slight differences) may be issued individually - so keeping both makes sense. For example, the Germany 1971 "Sapporo 1972" S/S (Scott #B475a) was issued without an imprint on the bottom-right; while the same individual stamps had an imprint "1971".

I know at least once instance of recent Thai issues with the S/S stamp being different from the single stamp issue. Not counting the imperforate S/S of course which I refuse to buy or collect. (Not counting a Gabon S/S where the DC3 aircraft is on the imperforate S/S but not anywhere else;-)
