I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

I do not collect perfins but have a bunch that I might try to sell. To do that I have questions for prospective buyers. First, I know that to best see perfins, the stamp should be placed face down on a black or dark surface. I also know that the country of origin is important. But I have the following questions.

Is the catalogue number of the stamp important or just the fact that the stamp is different from the others? See the following images.

Image Not Found

Both stamps are US and right side up but are different catalogue numbers.

While some of the perfins are obvious, how do I know if the perfin is right side up or down? See the following images.

Image Not Found

Both stamps are US and different catalogue numbers, but the stamp on the left is right side up while the one on the right is upside down.

Any help appreciated.

re: Questions For Perfin Collectors

I would say that if you are putting individual stamps up then a side by side of back and front would be best. This obviates the need for a catalogue number as not all have them or are different publishers.
If in approvals then a double page image showing front and back, keeping the stamps in correct order, would enable a buyer to make their choice.

I collect railroad perfins, and some others that look interesting. To me the catalog number doesn't matter.

re: Questions For Perfin Collectors

It is better to show the front of the stamp and the back of the stamp. The back of the stamp must be placed the same way up as the front of the stamp...ALWAYS!!

That way the buyer can see what stamp is being offered and what the perfin is and also whether the perfin is right side up, upside down or sideways.

The front of the stamp also determines what the selling price should be. (You are going to sell a 2c from the Presidents Set at a lower price than a 10c from the Columbus Set)

If one is not technically minded then the auctions allows you to show the front of the stamp in one scan and the back of the stamp in the 2nd scan.

Catalogue numbers are not required by me!

Thank everyone for your responses. If and when I get ready to put in the Approvals, I will show the back, right side up and the front.

Answered my questions .

For those that are interested in Perfins here is the link to the Perfin Society:-

This is their new site

https://perfinsoc.org.uk/

But this is their old site which contains a page of links to on line catalogues and other information about perfins.

https://www.angelfire.com/pr/perfinsoc/i ...

The Perfins Club has a catalogue of Canadian Perfins.

The link that follows is the list of catalogues from the Perfins Club. Some are online and free others have to be purchased.

https://www.perfins.org/perfin-catalogs- ...

Hong Kong Perfins free illustrated catalogue:-
