In the early days, stamps from Great Britain and the British Commonwealth used the letter "d" to indicate "pence" e.g. "3d". Why did they use a "d" rather than a "p"?

Pound - shilling - pence in Latin is Libra - solidus - denarius. Therefore L / s / d

In the Middle Ages this system was used all over Europe, but in the end it was used the longest in Great Britain.
