i'm no precancel collector, but the bottom line suggests a precancel. it doesn't look like a BEP font, though. and the orientation of 629 is horizontal, not vertical, which describes most definitives.

It would definitely be a local precancel, applied to sheets of stamps at the post office.
I remember in the 1970s a nearby post office had the precancel device. It was nothing more than a rubber stamper with six images to cancel six definitive size stamps at a time.
In my constant sorting of my multi boxes of stamps..i found something unexpected what is probably a precancel from Sheridan Wyoming on scott #629 the 2 cent White Plains stamp. I dabble very little in U.S. stamps but i do have a couple of stockbooks of U.S. precancels where this guy will most likely end up. I could not find any info on this stamp on the last page (Wyoming) in my Town and Type catalog of the U.S. and territories. If someone could shed any light on this stamp i would really appreciate it.
