Hi Harvey,
I've been fascinated by these over the years and I've accumulated just over a hundred on a couple of stock sheets. However, I've never sorted them properly.
I'll try and scan some of these tomorrow.
SG Part 1 (and also the SG NZ catalogue etc.) lists which stamps (value, shade, watermark) exist with particular advertisement settings and colours but they don't list the individual adverts.
I'm sure I've seen details of the settings somewhere and I'll have a look again tomorrow.
There were three settings, each of 240 stamps but I don't remember whether the four panes of 60 in each setting were the same or not.
As far as I remember, the adverts have no particular order within each setting and some are repeated more than others.
I think I'm going to keep them in the back of my mind and whenever I see some at reasonable prices I'll try to get them. I already collect New Zealand anyway so it isn't like I'm starting a new country. It'll be an interesting side collection for an interesting country. I'd love to see a few scans from anyone out there who has some of them.
I've been a serious collector for over 50 years and it's always fun to find something else of interest. The last new thing was the "stamps" from Kaulbach Island in NS, a local postage consisting of 17 series of stamps and that's complete now. Cheryl has a complete set as well but she went much further into the history of the island as well.
Hi Harvey,
These stamps are often calls "Adsons", I guess simply because they're stamps with "ads on" their backs.
Most of mine are single used stamps but I have a number of pairs and these are all 1d stamps.
I've scanned my pairs and these are not in any special order.
And here are my last pairs:
The first stamp in the last row is an advert for the company that sold the advertising space on the stamps.
I see they also sold advertising on telegrams.
Most of my other Adsons are the 2d value. I also have one or two each of the 2½d, 4d, 8d and 1/- values.
I don't actually have any yet - coming with next, and last, BC stamp. But you did answer my question! Since adds are on used stamps they must have been under the gum. So obviously, print both sides first, gum and lastly perforate!
Is there such a thing as a “Vario Page” that is clear rather than black?
If so, that would be great for mounting these stamps so you could see both sides easily.
I believe most of the Vario pages are available in either black double sided or clear single sided. I use the clear ones for covers or paper currency.
Josh
Thanks Josh, that’s great to know!
I’m going to track some down for a few of the covers I have in my “Philatelic History of The Holocaust” album!
Cheers, Dave.
Hi Dave,
I use clear Vario pages for perfins as well as for postcards and covers.
My only criticism is that you can't get Vario pages with six strips per page.
I'll take a ton of these, I know someone that can use them.
"I'll take a ton of these, I know someone that can use them."
I'll take the 5th.
I've been looking at E-Bay trying to get a feel for prices in case I decide to get into this. Only problem is that the prices are all over the place!! If I'm going to collect the "adsons" I really don't care if the stamps have faults as long as the ads are readable. Does anyone have a source that lists prices for these items? I have no real idea how rare they are or what the price should be. Can anyone quote me a ball park price? I like the stamps but I really don't want to overpay!
I’m going back to the Nov. 20 post. Can some of the ladies out there explain what they are complaining about? What are Beecham’s Pill’s going to do for them?
I would say that it was period pains and menopausal symptoms that Beechams thought women were complaining of, not that the ladies were complaining, just coping and getting on with life, as usual.
Though of course it could have been us males without empathy and getting under their feet.
Ladies complaints, circa 1880s.
A delicate subject, often coupled with the word hysteria .
The best I can do in this format is point out the average male's absolute lack of knowledge pertaining to mutual satisfaction.
I read a bit about this in medical books in my miss-spent youth.
Cryptic, yes, as late as the mid-1970s.
And I bet there are a few today who have no idea what i am alluding to.
Quiet desperation.
Sad.
On several NZ stamps from the late 1800's (Scott #'s 61 - 69) there is advertising on the backs of the stamps. I'm assuming it's under the gum, but I'm not sure. I just bought an interesting lot of 6 from my regular dealer for a very reasonable price. It looks like it might be a very interesting side collection. Do any of you collect them and do you know if any site or reference book has a comprehensive list. The E-Bay prices are all over the map from a few dollars to over $100 and I have no idea whether this is because some are rarer than others or if some sellers are out to lunch. Do any of you have any advice for me if I decide to carry on with this. I'm not sure if I should just get a small selection or go at this "whole hog". I have no idea how many different ones were done.
