You are right for formal or technical writing but the title here is discussion, a different kettle of fish.
i think we have a list of the common philatelic abbreviations somewhere handy. i am sure someone will show you where.
as for using google, a few clicks on the keyboard replaces the two large dictionaries, the thesaurus, and the french, the german and the dutch dictionaries i kept at the end of my desk for 40 or 50 years. a world atlas also, and a guide to proper english usage.
In this world of online social media, a shorthand has rapidly developed for better or worse (abbreviated words, acronyms, emoji's) It creeps over to all aspects. IMO

I don't have very good writing skills and cannot spell.
One thing I did learn when using an "abbreviations" to always spell out the word, then using (use the abbreviation)!
Is this incorrect now?
I see a lot of go check google, which I don't like.
We were taught when you write, and don't know everyone that will read what you write to always use the right and proper abbreviation rule above.
