I've been checking out a bunch of stuff I have lying around and ran into a little stamp album from 1955 called "The Adventurer Stamp Album Around the World With Postage Stamps". Thankfully there was nothing of any real value in the book because all the stamps were ruined. Whatever hinges the person used caused such a major brown stain that it soaked right through the stamp! I have never run into anything like this before and hope I never do again. I've seen remnants of very old hinges before but nothing like this. They looked like real hinges but I wonder if the person somehow made his/her own and used glue!

Using tape causes brown stains like that that to stamps over time too.

@Harvey

I don't recall who said it here on SOR, it went something like "everything has value"!

I assume the brown mark only exists where the hinge is?

What are you going to do with this wonderful collection of brown stained stamps?

I know I probably said that all things have value. I don't think these are good for anything except throwing out. They might actually be dangerous to other stamps. I think what the person did was make hinges out of folded over tape!!

@Harvey

Is this a collection you bought? Why would you buy it?

You might try using hydrogen peroxide on them, maybe that would help.

Good luck with your collection.

Elsewhere a collector stated their opinion of hinges was similar to Mildred Pierce's view of hangers. I am dealing with a collection where the stamps were hinged improperly so a tedious to remove.

No more hinges!

Nope, didn't buy it, just one of those dumb things that you've accumulated when people give you stuff. The stuff I was previously discussing from my own collection was a few souvenir sheets (minor ones) with tiny brown stains at the very edge of the perfs. I will replace them! These have bloody big brown stains in the middle of the stamps that soaked through from the "hinges". The only place for these is the garbage before they come in contact with other stuff!

Oh yes stuff people gave me, lucky I never received anything like your really nastry hinges.

When the trash was from relaives I feel like I have to keep it. But I'd rather store it in the fireplace.

Yes, I agree there are a lot of dumb stamp collectors, which I use politely! I just finished going through a nice selection of Norway officials and I'm not sure if an elephant licked the hinges, or some were welded to the pages. A lot of them are going into the fireplace. Some of the hinges were wet at the top and bottom, a couple were hinged from the bottom, some twisted around on the hinge and I have no idea how to accomplish that, but someone must have not been paying attention to what they were doing. Angry But since they were not all cheap stamps I don't think it was a young person doing all of these nasty things to them. Just someone in a huge hurry, maybe. If you can't find time to take care of your stamps, maybe you should try collecting something less fragile, like hand grenades.

A friend of mine, my wife's old boss at B. I. O.'s library (Bedford Institute of Technology) collected Bayonets and other miscellaneous military stuff. I used to sell her doubles in my antique shop. The oddest thing of hers I ever sold was a WWI German water cooled machine gun, not in working order thankfully! A collector from Ontario bought it for his military collection for $600. Anna made a nice profit after picking it up at a yard sale for only $100. She figured it was a discard from a Legion since the were four small nail holes where a plaque would have been. Next time we have lunch I'll ask her about hand grenades!!

I was soaking stamps today to remove from paper hinges. I felt like I was peeling shrimp. The stamps came off the paper quickly but hinges mostly had to peeled off.

I had an album once where the doofus used folded over pieces of selvage as hinges. I had to slip an exacto knife between the Stamp and the page, then soak the stamps.

Wasn't this the standard way of mounting stamps in an album before the advent of prefolded hinges? I have a 1904 album in which all the stamps are mounted this way. The most common alternative at the time was to glue them to the sheet.

Perhaps the decendents of the collectors who performed this foul deed should pay you reparations for the decreased value of the stamps so hinged.
