Phil,
This cover gets even more interesting after noting the Olympics symbol in the cancelation. Here is some information from Wikipedia:
"Games of the XII Olympiad, firstly scheduled in Tokyo, Japan, rescheduled in Helsinki, Finland, finally canceled due to World War II
The 1940 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XII Olympiad, was a planned international multi-sport event scheduled to have been held from September 21 to October 6, 1940 in Tokyo City, Empire of Japan, and later rescheduled for July 20 to August 4, 1940 in Helsinki, Finland following the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937. They were ultimately cancelled due to World War II alongside the 1940 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Empire of Japan, and were the third games to be canceled due to war. Helsinki would eventually host the 1952 Summer Olympics."
What draws us? Part in our DNA and part in our life's experiences to that date.
As a kid, I don't think I ever noticed stamps. My father was in the US Army and we were living in Izmir, Turkey in 1966. That makes me 8 years old. At that time, there was no TV in Izmir. That's right I grew up for a few years without television!
That left us kids to read books, and I was reading Johnny Appleseed. We had received a package from my grand parents, which was our lifeline to the world! My father points to the package and to the Johnny Appleseed stamps that franked it. That was a big Aha! moment for me.
I still remember every detail and even at 8 I knew I had just experienced a life changing moment... or maybe a life defining moment... I immediately was intently interested in stamps. I grabbed every piece of mail, and my father, who worked at the NATO offices, would bring home stamps from their mail. For Christmas that year, I received an album. And it's been that way for the last 45 years!
And I still have that stamp! Stained and wrinkled from my adolescent handling, I mounted it in my teen Minuteman album. I'm sure the next owner of this collection will pull out and destroy the stamp without realizing it's significance! It's the stamp that changed my world!
I believe the cover was posted before the Olympics were supposed to begin, possibly 1939 but I cannot quite see the year clear enough.
Maybe Phil can enlighten us ?
Nice one either way.
The date on the cover looks like August 4th.
I can't see August 4th except in the Olympic part of the cancel. The datestamp is July 5th and I think 1939 but Phil will tell us.
You will won't you Phil ?
What drew me to this cover was the handstamp/manuscript provisional postage marking. A short while later and the Ryukyu Islands would have their own stamps.
I have always loved history and literature...looking at both sides of my family i do not know where it comes from. I see a cover and i am attracted to it. This Finland cover for instance...did i get it at the club or a stamp show ?? At this moment it does not matter, i see the year 1940 and the Geneva Convention semipostal...are Finland and Russia already at war ?
