wow, that's quite drastic.
On the website of DR, the Danish public broadcaster, it says (translated into English)
"At the turn of the year, it will no longer be possible to have a letter delivered with PostNord.
With increasing digitalization, the number of letters in Denmark is rapidly decreasing, and therefore PostNord in Denmark will stop delivering letters in 2026 in order to focus on being the Danes' preferred package supplier, a press release says.
The decision will affect a total of 2,200 employees, of whom 700 will be offered other positions. But this means that PostNord plans to cut 1,500 positions during 2025.
PostNord's remarkable decision also means that Danes will have to say goodbye to the red mailboxes, which have been part of the cityscape throughout the country for years.
According to PostNord, this concerns 1,500 mailboxes that will also be gone before the turn of the year.
Danes who have purchased postage stamps can get them refunded for a “limited period” in 2026.
However, you may still have time to get your Christmas card delivered before 2025 turns into 2026. The last letter will be distributed on December 30th of this year."

This might start a trend, other countries might do the same thing!!
The question about letters sent to Denmark is an interesting one! Do we have any members in Denmark?
EDIT: I did a search in the member information and we have two active Danish members. Both of them have 0 stamps bought and 0 stamps sold so if mail stops flowing there in 2026 it will probably not affect them. But I can see other countries "jumping on this bandwagon" eventually since there are quite a few countries whose stamp sales are mostly to collectors. Very interesting for the future!
I wonder what the UPU position is on the delivery of letters from other countries into a country that will not deliver mail, or will Denmark pull out of the UPU?
Presumably private enterprise can take over postal deliveries, but at what price.
I don't personally send to anyone in Denmark. (Or live there :|)
This would be crushing for me if I did live there!
No stamps?!
It is already a lot that my country (USA) is ditching the cent.
A penny costs 3.7c to make, a nickel costs 14c!
Is it really a 90% for the service?
I guess some other company plans to make a buck or two on this predicament!

Is Norway next?
There's an article on lifeinnorway.net from December of 2024 that says just that.
They don't say so, but I assume mail will be available for pick-up at a designated post office. Surely they can't simply say "mail no longer exists in Denmark.
I think all Government-run postal services have to take a look at the taxpayer's money being pissed away. In Canada, I have to walk to a community mailbox to get my mail but my friend has mail delivered to his door. Grandfathered because he is in an older house. Not fair!
The Union is too strong IMO. The big labour dispute (that was temporarily halted) hinges upon Canada Post wanting to get more competitive with weekend parcel delivery. But instead of increasing employment with part-time workers, the Union wants current employees to do the job and get overtime pay. Ridiculous!
Regarding delivery of international mail:
The FAQ says -
"You can send letters to and from abroad with PostNord for the rest of the year. PostNord Denmark has been appointed by the Ministry of Transport to handle international mail until 31 December 2025. After that, it will be up to the Ministry of Transport to decide, e.g. through a tender, who will handle the task in the future. "
Question for the experts:
Will this increase the demand for Denmark 1940 and older stamps?
why would it? I really do not see any reason for that, especially since no stamps at all will be usable from January 1st 2026.
So if you're living in a little remote village, and you're an elderly and not a techy person, how do you communicate with and send things to your grandchildren in Copenhagen? All by phone, i suppose. Will the private company that fills the gap be affordable? There seems to be very little info about this. Which country will be next?
"Which country will be next?"
"A penny costs 3.7c to make, a nickel costs 14c!"
"I have a solution for you. Mint the same 1 cent count, but make it read 5 cents. Silver or copper , why should it matter?"
I wonder what will happen to all of the "JUNK MAIL" we receive daily? Some days that's all we receive and plenty of which are in envelopes and 99% goes into the recycle bin. I do use some of the stiffer card types to send stamps out with, so they aren't totally wasted.

Would be fun to just go metric already.
All of our tools are.
A party of a bill that WILL NEVER pass through congress! Haha.
I believe this was proposed once in the 90s maybe?
@PhilatelistMag20
"Would be fun to just go metric already.", not possible as U.S.A. stamps the perf's are on ince stanard not metric.
But I think you have a good idea, I use metrics in my workshop for everything (wood).
Imperial is working just fine for me!

Nevermind metrication............Cubits, Palms and Digits are alright by me!
If they were good enough for the Ancient Egyptians they are good enough for me.
Many, many years ago I saw a cartoon that summed up the British attitude to going metric.
It was a drawing of a large Wall with a large sign on it.
The sign said:-
Metrication Board..............100 yards>
"The American Philatelic Society, like most stamp collectors, measures stamp perforations using a perforation gauge, which determines the number of perforation holes in a 2-centimeter span, expressed as "Perf.
"
@Brechinite,
Exactly! If the Egyptians built the Great Pyramids and the Romans built the Aquaducts all without the metric system I think we're gonna be just fine.
True, it would be hard to measure perfs.
A interesting debate!
a few things just gotta be in metric.... stamp perfs and medicine immediately come to mind!

From the BBC:
"Denmark's state-run postal service, PostNord, is to end all letter deliveries at the end of 2025, citing a 90% decline in letter volumes since the start of the century."
"The decision brings to an end 400 years of the company's letter service. Denmark's 1,500 post boxes will start to disappear from the start of June."
From the PostNord Website:
"You can buy postal labels from PostNord until 18 December 2025."
"We have ensured that all postal labels purchased in 2024 or 2025 can be refunded for a limited period in 2026, if they are not used in 2025."
I assume from the above than Denmark will no longer issue postage stamps after 2025.
