David, not sure if this would take 20 years, but I DO have a T3 signoscope or mechanical watermark detector.
Not sure how to use Image Slueth, as such, but if you'd send the stamp to me, in a very colorful (commemoratives franked) envelope, I'll check it, and mail it back free of charge.
Let me know, what you think!
PM me for more questions!

Thanks Ari, but I need a quick resolution to this problem.
I have an electronic watermark detector, which has languished in it's box since I bought it and used it once. Useless object.
The watermarkseems to be a bit more visible now, after some work with Pixelmator ("Photoshop" for Apple computers) to increase contrast and sharpness; I think I oriented the stamp the right way to see the watermark "right side up," assuming the watermark is actually there!

Bob
Stepping back from my display seems to make the watermark a bit more clear. Sort of.
Bob
If possible add arrows to parts of the watermark you see?
EDIT: Would it be possible to provide what the watermark looks like? Your purple (?) scan I think I can see partial of the crown!
@1899: I don't have a Stanley Gibbons catalogue, and don't know what the equivalent watermark would be in the Scott catalogue. In fact, Scott doesn't list any British stamps issued in 1864. There is a 4p vermillion stamp that was issued in 1865.
Bob
My 1990 SG Commonwealth does not list a 121aa but does list 121a, which is pale rose, emergency printing on Perkins Bacon paper watermarked with double lined numeral "4". No crowns.
From what I am seeing it looks more like a "2".
The watermark is a single-lined numeral 4, and thanks for the effort, but I can't see it at all. Also, please note that the stamp is Victoria, Australia, not GB

I have an idea, but it takes 2 people.
Hold the stamp in one hand, with the other hand hold a flashlight to the stamp, then the other person uses the camera and takes a photo of the watermark!
I know it sounds crazy, but maybe it would work.
I tried that, to no avail. The pic, despite numerous attempts, was a white blob of a stamp. I'm still trying that method, but I'm going on the hunt for some lighter fluid tomorrow!
In my Scott 2011 Classic Specialized, it would appear to be Scott #76, watermark 80a if it is single lined (solid within the outline).
The double lined is Sc #91, watermark 75 and shows clear between the lines.
The left end of the crosspiece on 80a is a vertical bar, on 75 it is a triangle.
Here is a combined image of the front and back, what I'm seeing as a 2 could be the curled end of the postmark.

"what I'm seeing as a 2 could be the curled end of the postmark"
I think it can be said that it is a type 4 watermark:
You can try using a desk lamp behind the stamp.
Good results are obtained (it also depends on the type of paper - coated paper is harder):

I don't know what a type 4 watermark is, there isn't such a thing in Scott that I can see The watermark for this series was a single lined watermark that corresponded to the value of the stamp (2 for 2d, 4 for 4d, 6 for 6d etc). The way it's listed in Scott appears most unhelpful and inaccurate.

Sorry..in Scott is wmk. 80a

I finally managed to track down some lighter fluid, and excitedly looked for my watermark tray. Unfortunately it seems to be hiding with all my missing tweezers. So, it was back to basics as suggested by 1899, and voila, a nice sideways 4

Glad you got it sorted, looks like the bar of the four has a fishtail so confirming double lined, it is also clear between the lines. Nice find.
We're not seeing the same thing. That's a single lined, solid, watermark. The bar of the four shouldn't be the decider here. The double-lined watermarks show a very clear gap between the sides, as clearly shown in Scott

I've also just realised that's it's sideways reversed as well. I might be able to retire! Again.
I stand corrected, well actually I'm sitting, but you know what I mean.

can some one give me the URL for downloading image sleuth
when I look, it appears something different from what I expected, and I don't want to download mal ware.
thanks
Okay,
see photo!
Click the one of the links circled in grey/black. The yellow circled ones, and ANY pop up ads are MALICIOUS junk. X off the pop-ups.
The real link will take you to sourceforge. Do not click anything else there, just wait until your computer says it has downloaded.
Avoid clicking on anything else in sourceforge! That site is mostly garbage. (My opinion!)

My eyesight is lousy, but in the 3rd pic I see an upside down "5"

Hi All,
I need some help if possible. I'm no slouch with technology, but I'm having a devil of a time extracting a visible watermark on this stamp. The watermark shows clearly when held up against a bright light and I've run out of watermark fluid. The stamp in question is Victoria 1864 4d Rose-red watermark sideways (SG121aa). It's unpriced in SG, so it's a nice find.
Can anyone else try to find the sideways numeral 4 watermark on this image please? It's in the top half of the image and I can see it, but I need to share an unequivocal image.
Thanks in advance
