Canada Post requests a vote by CUPW-represented employees on the Corporation’s final offers

https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca ...

"Canada Post has asked the Minister of Jobs and Families to exercise her authority ... to direct that a vote take place ... on the final offers submitted by Canada Post to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) on May 28, 2025."

On a strictly local basis, the rural delivery drivers in this community do not want to strike. Last strike cost them a lot and they can't afford it again. Hopefully, this sentiment is shared in the larger cities in Canada. My last conversation with them was that they thought CUPW management was calling the shots and they were not expecting the opportunity to vote again, so this is good news.

We'll just have to wait and see.

Looks like a strike may be averted after all.

CUPW Invites Canada Post to Fair, Final and Binding Arbitration

https://www.cupw.ca/en/statement-cupw-in ...

I can't imagine Canada Post turning this down, given that financially, they don't have two nickels to rub together, thus any significant decision against them could put them into bankruptcy. Any arbitrator would have to take this into account.

Here's hoping!

I'd like to get back to doing business without the uncertainty of the last two weeks.

re: Update on Canada Post Labour Dispute - New update

Well, I called that one wrong. Canada Post rejects CUPW's call for binding arbitration, and fires their words of October 2024 right back at them.

https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/c ...

Canada Post responds to union’s request for binding arbitration

"After 18 months of challenging negotiations with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), Canada Post is seeking a timely and fair resolution to restore stability to the postal system while ensuring employees have a voice in the process by allowing them to vote.

The union’s proposal to send the matter to binding arbitration would do the opposite.

Arbitration would be long and complicated, likely lasting more than a year. This would further extend the uncertainty experienced over the last 18 months and accelerate the company’s significant financial challenges. It would also continue to leave employees without a contract – and strip them of their right to vote on a new collective agreement.

For these reasons and more, CUPW has strongly rejected binding arbitration in the past.

In a bulletin to members on October 30, 2024, CUPW President Jan Simpson wrote: “It’s evident that Canada Post is focused on pushing many of their issues to binding arbitration. This approach would delay the finalization of a complete collective agreement and redirect funds towards lawyers and arbitrators rather than investing in you.”"

"The Industrial Inquiry Commission has stated that “Canada Post is facing an existential crisis: It is effectively insolvent, or bankrupt. Without thoughtful, measured, staged, but immediate changes, its fiscal situation will continue to deteriorate.”

A timely resolution to negotiations that begins to address these challenges without delay, while respecting the important role employees play by allowing them to vote on the company’s future path, is the way forward.

Canada Post therefore rejects the union’s proposal and awaits a decision from the Minister of Jobs and Families on our request for the Canada Industrial Relations Board to administer a directed employee vote on our final offer."

We are still having our mail delivered on a regular basis. Apparently, the union is not allowing overtime work.

FYI: Clerk at our local Post Office when asked about the Postal Strike in Canada responded "It's news to me." Kind of makes me worried - or not worried.

"The union and Canada Post have agreed on a settlement."

Sorry, but that's a different union. That is with the 8,500 member CPAA "Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association" who are the Postmasters, not the 55,000 member CUPW which are the letter carriers.

The government has directed the union to hold a member vote (which the union management was resisting) on Canada Post's "final offer" of May 28. The date for the vote has not yet been set. The union board has unanimously recommended that the membership vote "no", however the feeling among union members in our rural town here is pretty much unanimous "let's get this over with .... I want to keep working".

Let's see how the big cities feel.

For now, mail is moving normally.
