Jeremy,
Not sure about mildew spores, but I have used with cigarette smoke. If you have a clothes dryer that you can put a rack in, then lay the albums, etc. on the rack, place dryer sheets in dryer and turn on. Let run for awhile.
See if that works.

The LAST thing I would do is spary fabric softener!
Not just that it irritates peoples eyes, including mine.
I find it damages stamps, and sometimes have to return them if they smell like air-freshener and fabric softener.
Againg, only in EXTREME cases, do I have to do so.
Scents have bothered me forever!
Now, to get rid of mildew, had some bad album pages.
i made em into a lot, when I cleaned them up.
Got rid of 80% of the smell, just putting it next to an air purifier for 2-3 weeks, that worked, but took forever.
EDIT:
It is not just the smell.
I got a batch of stamps once on ebay that someone must've actually sprayed. They were curled and warped!
Had to return them.
Never said to spray fabric softener. Simply said to use a couple of dryer sheets. Never had a problem with item smelling like fabric softener. But did diminish the cigarette smoke smell.
The experiments are complete. Here are my findings.
The newspaper will work but takes the longest. I'm sure that it will work faster in small batches of material.
The charcoal briquet was a bust. It just didn't work at all.
The fabric softener/dryer sheet worked very well.
So we have a winner. The dryer sheet.

I really thought the charcoal briquet would work better than it did.
I don't know if what I found on Youtube really works or not, thought I'd pass it on.
On Youtube search for "Getting Smells out of Old Paper".
The below method has worked well for me.
1. Use some baking soda to partially fill a small(ish) bowl. Do not cover the bowl.
2. Take the (mildew smelling) album, stock book, pages, whatever, and place it horizontally in a small trash bag (in one stack).
3. Place the trash bag horizontally somewhere on the floor.
4. Place the bowl with the baking soda off to the side of the article mentioned in #2 above (inside the trash bag).
5. Close the draw strings of the trash bag so that there is an airtight seal.
6. Leave alone for a minimum of 2 weeks (a month is better).
7. Repeat as necessary.

A thousand pardons - I gave my above post a thumbs up by mistake. My apologies!

I recently acquired a 22lb box lot that has the smell of mildew in some of the material that came in the lot. For instance old album pages and a couple of album binders that could be very useful to someone if I get rid of the smell. The lot is one of those that was subjected to high humidity through out an undetermined number of years.
I have decided to try placing some of the items in a plastic container and pack with news paper to absorb the odor.
I also plan on trying another experiment with some charcoal briquets in a plastic container.
Then as another experiment I'll try using a fabric softener sheet in a plastic container.
I know how difficult killing mildew spores is.
What are some recommended methods from all you SOR experts. Share with us some first hand experience.
