General Philatelic/Gen. Discussion : EFO's 2

I have requested that the original EFO thread that I started in U.S. forums be closed because it has become so long. Now since it was such a popular thread I feel that a new one should be opened to include all nations and lets limit the thread length to 150 posts.

So lets see them ladies and gentleman. It's a show and tell thread.

re: EFO's 2

A very interesting stamp to start with. When the inverted yellow background was discovered it was decided to print a large number with the error intentionally on the stamp to take the value down of the few actually varieties in existence. This was almost the only time this was ever done!! If someone ever found a copy of the variety with the date it first occurred they would have a rare item indeed!!! I believe the reissue occurred on Nov 16th 1962 so a postmark before that would be very desirable!!

re: EFO's 2

Here is another that is really special for a couple of reasons. The first and most important reason is. It was given to me by a member of this forum and his handle is 1899. Thank you again Dave.

It is a U159 design type U44 and it is an EFO for a couple of reasons too. One the right numeral 3 is broken and not complete the other is the cancel was double transferred.

Finally what makes this cover so unique to me is that it was sent to a 7 or 8 times great uncle of mine. My last name is McLean and have traced it back to my uncle John from Pokeepsie New York. Image Not Found

re: EFO's 2

And now for one a bit different. I have a complete collection of Kaulbach Island stamps. They are local stamps to pay for ferry postage to and from privately owned Kaulbach Island off Chester Nova Scotia. The only other person in our group (as far as I know) who collects these is Cheryl Grantham. Her collection is really amazing to see since it also goes into the history of the island as well as a complete collection of all the stamps. We both have this error and mine is on a sheet which makes it interesting! The thing that makes it an EFO is the break in the rim in the first stamp in the second row! It also shows up in the regular sheet but this is the one overprinted for the last year of the service.

Is the Bluenose a flat press printed stamp?

If so what is the cause of this EFO?

Edit: If this stamp is flat press printed, my guess as to the cause; detached relief.

re: EFO's 2

I am a stamp collector, mainly because I like and appreciate the objects themselves, almost like little miniature works of art. I do what has to be done to actually ID the stamp and have very little interest in things like flat or rotary press printing or wet and dry printings unless I need it to ID the stamp. Rather than show my ignorance on certain topics I have decided to follow the wise path and "keep my mouth shut". That way I can avoid (usually) making a fool of myself. If anyone else wants to answer 1899's question please feel free to do so, I'm not going to get involved, it's safer that way. I feel that many times questions are being asked to see if the person being asked knows the answer rather than the asker trying to get information he doesn't know!

The stamps here are from a 1962 Jewish National Fund issue, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the JNF.
It depicts a scene from the 1901 Zionist Congress in Basle, Switzerland showing Theodore Herzl addressing the delegates.

The bottom block of 4 shows the normal issue in Brown and Blue, Perf 10½.

The same design was also issued in Brown and Green.

The middle block is Imperforate and has a part of the design doubled, inverted and in the wrong colour......but only on two of the four stamps !!!
Don't ask !!

The top pair needs no explanation.

Jewish National Fund Stamps.

This one has a lot going for it !! A 1962 addition to an earlier (1954) series honoring the second President of the State of Israel, Yitzhak Ben Zvi. Issued in various sheet formats and Perf 10½.

A few Imperfs are known. This block should be in a much darker shade of blue. Then of course there is the (hilarious) double design, a sideways impression of the blue part of the design from the stamp shown in a previous post commemorating the 60th anniversary of the JNF.

All good fun !Surprise

Jewish National Fund.

This issue of 1948 marks the planting of Tamarisk trees in Beersheva. Genesis 21:33 tells us that Abraham planted a tree there.

Three colours in the set, Green, Brown and Blue. They exist with and without values and with values in red.

Printed in sheets of 10x10 on watermarked paper. Perf 11½.

Different shades were used and the normal stamp issue (without value) can be seen to the left of a pair with the dark green shade missing.

Found this stamp from Nepal in a batch of kiloware I soaked earlier this week. Looks like the black printing is double to me. What does everyone think? Does double printing count as a error or just a freak?

Thanks,
Josh

Wonder why "Nepal" is not doubled?

Without more info unable to determine how the double images were produced.

Not my area, perhaps a Nepal expert could provide more info?

re: EFO's 2

a comment and a question to 1899

on 295, is it a space filler because of those slightly nibbled perfs at UR? or the 3/16" shift?

on the 279B with overprint, because it wasn't added by the USPOD, that would make it a counterfeit or a forgery, and not an EFO.

On the 295 overall conditions warrant a space filler condition, I have the stamp in front of me you don't. Hope this answers your question?

On the 279B is a real USPOD stamp. The I.R. is a fake overprint, sure it could be counterfeit or a forgery or an EFO. Again I have the stamp in front of me and you do not! I think it's an EFO but you do not think so.

Promise to payment amount $143.64, tax required 4 cents. Now then R155 was cancelled on 1 July 1898, then the next day 279b was cancelled on 2 July 1898. It appears like a mistake was made on 1 July 1898 by applying a single 2 cent stamp was used. Then on 2 July 1898 another 2 cent stamp was applied bring total tax 4 cents. The 2 cent stamp used was 279b (regular postage stamp), not a revenue stamp!

I'm not saying this to upset anyone but I know some people aren't opening some strings because they have no interest in the last item posted. What they forget is that by doing this they could be missing stuff they really want to see that's a post or two before that one. If you have time open everything whether the last post interests you or not. I posted a couple items on the EFO 2 string that should have interested the Canada collectors but almost no one saw them because they were probably not interested in the post after it. Even if you have no interest in seeing the post that is showing you should have a look anyway. Surely you're not in that much of a hurry!!

Harvey,

I completely understand and empathize with the message you are sending and agree with most of it. It just seems to me that there is too much childish comments and subliminal cheap shots/comments that one or two individuals take over what is supposed to be a fun thread and just ruin it for everyone else. Not everyone has the same taste pallet for the material that seems to be dominating the thread I started and that is do in large part because the individual who has been contributing the most to the thread has a large quantity of material to share with the rest of the world.

If that bothers some people then Contribute something else or move on to the next topic. It's that simple.

Don't make it personal and turn this subject/thread into a flame war of words of wit. It proves nothing other than a select group of senior citizens can act like their shoe size and not their age.

I really hope no one thinks I am doing that. I open and check out every post on this site and have done so since I joined, if someone takes the time to make a post the very least we can do is read it! I have, over the years, said a few thing I shouldn't have, but it's almost always a case of not thinking first! As to the posts we are talking about here, I do collect US revenue stamps, but not to the same degree 1899 does. He has wonderful material that I enjoy looking at even though most of it is beyond what I look for. The only thing I am trying to tell people is that just because the last post doesn't interest you, keep in mind that by ignoring it you might be missing material we really might want to see. We might even think we don't "like" a certain poster but it is very dangerous to decide you don't like someone you don't even know. That's just not right!!

This one shows a scarce Carmine colour shift. It's the only one I have ever seen. Unlisted until recently.

Not long ago I posted the missing carmine error on this sheet. Could this one here be the Carmine colour crawling off the sheet to produce the other one shown previously ?? Laughing

Canada's Bluenose is certainly a beautiful stamp and is always put up as Canada's finest, but I've always loved the baby QE II stamp and the above scans show why. Even the eyes are very well done! But then, I was always an Elizabeth II fan.
Big Creek Dad, I hope that you found a UV lightbar to use. I also saw a couple on Amazon in that price range. They were just light bars, though, and didn't look as though they had a handle like the one I bought that was for stamps. It's not like you use them every day so they might be fine.

Mel,
that second Holmes stamp is weird. How in the world does that happen? Thought the stamp was all one color. Wondering how only his jacket is affected.

Well, since I am such an expert. Winking I would guess that some sort of chemical interaction took place. Even though all the features look the same except for the jacket, if you really look close, the one on the right is actually darker on all the features. Other wise, I have no idea. May be someone on SOR can shed some light.

Shown here are the regular Souvenir Sheet together with a copy missing the year and 'ge' of Orange.
In all my years of collecting Stamp Exhibition material, I have never seen another one.
It is now listed.

It also shows up in the regular sheet but this is the one overprinted for the last year of the service.

The stamp-making process goes through so many processes, checks and balances that actual design errors shouldn't exist. Yet, here we are.

This issue of 1948 marks the planting of Tamarisk trees in Beersheva. Genesis 21:33 tells us that Abraham planted a tree there.

Three colours in the set, Green, Brown and Blue. They exist with and without values and with values in red.

Printed in sheets of 10x10 on watermarked paper. Perf 11½.

Different shades were used and the normal stamp issue (without value) can be seen to the left of a pair with the dark green shade missing.

re: EFO's 2

a comment and a question to 1899

on 295, is it a space filler because of those slightly nibbled perfs at UR? or the 3/16" shift?

on the 279B with overprint, because it wasn't added by the USPOD, that would make it a counterfeit or a forgery, and not an EFO.

That's just not right!!

re: EFO's 2

1960 London International Stamp Exhibition Souvenir Sheet.

This one shows a scarce Carmine colour shift. It's the only one I have ever seen. Unlisted until recently.

Not long ago I posted the missing carmine error on this sheet. Could this one here be the Carmine colour crawling off the sheet to produce the other one shown previously ?? Laughing

This is a 1991 Jewish National Fund Souvenir Sheet celebrating the 90th anniversary. The sheet of 3x2 should show a 90th anniversary design in Yellow Brown in position 2.

An unusual find that I had not previously seen.

re: EFO's 2

Canada's Bluenose is certainly a beautiful stamp and is always put up as Canada's finest, but I've always loved the baby QE II stamp and the above scans show why. Even the eyes are very well done! But then, I was always an Elizabeth II fan.
Big Creek Dad, I hope that you found a UV lightbar to use. I also saw a couple on Amazon in that price range. They were just light bars, though, and didn't look as though they had a handle like the one I bought that was for stamps. It's not like you use them every day so they might be fine.

Well, I might as well jump on the band wagon. Here are a couple of mine. First one is SC #2517A or 2519C. Not sure, maybe someone can shed some light. The second one are color shifts on SC#2527 and 1555.

These prefined only appear on some of the 1898 Commerce dollar values. I discovered these about 10 years ago, but still do not know what and why these are. I have many of these, maybe someday I'll find out, the chase is on!

R161r was printed and used first, then after a few weeks R162r was printed and used until the 1898 Series revenues ended June 30, 1902.

Unknown what caused the change on color!

Mel,
that second Holmes stamp is weird. How in the world does that happen? Thought the stamp was all one color. Wondering how only his jacket is affected.

re: EFO's 2

Well, since I am such an expert. Winking I would guess that some sort of chemical interaction took place. Even though all the features look the same except for the jacket, if you really look close, the one on the right is actually darker on all the features. Other wise, I have no idea. May be someone on SOR can shed some light.

1982 BPE event which had a number of much sought after souvenirs. Those were the days.

Shown here are the regular Souvenir Sheet together with a copy missing the year and 'ge' of Orange.
In all my years of collecting Stamp Exhibition material, I have never seen another one.
It is now listed.
