Back in the good old days Ebay let a group of reputable dealers police the stamp section for stuff like this as well as things like washed cancels, mistakes in ID, etc. Also because bidding was transparent you could notify bidders of problem items on your own.... (and that could get problematic in a hurry).
But rather than find a happy medium they have basically created a laissez faire environment that encourages fraudulent activity. A sad commentary on .....
weird stuff. This is what can be seen on places like etsy as well. extremely common stamps advertised as rarities with insane prices. One wonders if there are ever sales of stuff like that.
It just makes you realise how lucky we are with the sellers on Stamporama!
Go straight there to see some 'fun' listings !!!!!
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_fss=1 ...
I'm fighting the urge to flood their inbox with 5c offers on everything.
great idea
"This 1938-43 Washington 1 Cent Stamp is a piece of American history. With a green color and hand-stamped cancellation type, it is a unique addition to any stamp collection. The stamp features a portrait of George Washington, the first president of the United States, and is perfect for collectors interested in historical figures.
The stamp is ungraded and uncertified, but its quality is evident in its durability and longevity. It was manufactured in the United States and is a great representation of American art and history. This stamp is a must-have for any collector interested in historical figures and American art."
They are using AI to write the descriptions. Lost of words but nothing really said.
Ron,
"durability and longevity", "manufactured in the United States" yep, totally AI. Surprised that they would put that out there. That's laughable.
What if every one of us put a 5c offer on 2 listings? (Any more and they would block us all!)
Then they would realize there junk is not worth more than we pay here!
I wish these types of sellers would leave.
They heavily promote their listings, and it is all the junk I filter through in my ebay feed! :|
We are very lucky to have HONEST sellers here.
I cannot emphasize this enough.
It just takes one innocent unknowing person for them to be richer.
I wil continue to buy most of my stamps here and from trusted sellers like CKstamps on eBay.
Phil....promoting myself if you are looking for Canadian. Sorry...couldn't help it. Moderators...feel free to delete if not appreciate.
They don't take offers under 99 cents.... just tried. Although, I might reconsider. Not often you get a chance at durable stamps.
Rats!
Also does it cost $4.80 to mail a stamp?!
What is this 2045 or rush 3 seconds from now delivery?
Just for fun, I thought I'd check them out again. Zero listings
Here are some rhetorical questions for all of you who targeted this seller on eBay.
What did you hope to gain by doing that? You all have probably ruined a lively hood for someone and lost a potential collector.
Are you all that desperate for recognition for your own self grandiose?
I ask these questions because most if not all of you sell here on this forum, eBay and Hip stamp and you all would be crying wolf if someone did what you've done to this seller. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.
I'm really disgusted with the direction that this forum has gone and you all wonder why the membership has been in such sharp decline as of lately.
Jeremy
Jeremy,
I don't think posting on the discussion board and drawing attention to publicly offered stamp lots is out of bounds. After all, we're a club. Shouldn't we be seeking to help our fellow members to avoid the numerous pitfalls that are out there in the marketplace?
The second that seller hit the "submit" button and offered those items up for bids, they became fair game for public comment and scrutiny.
SoR membership goes up and SoR membership goes down; it ebbs and it flows.
Just my 2 cents.

Even though you label your question as rhetorical and therefore do not expect an answer, here is my view.
As I reread this thread, all I see is genuine surprise, unbelief and bewilderment about some eBay sellers' actions. We (forgive me for using the majestic plural) simply do not understand why some sellers put extremely common stamps on eBay with extravagant prices and wonder what is going on here. The only thing I - and others - can think of is some kind of fraud.
I really do not think that the posts in this thread destroyed someone's livelihood, after all there was a shared doubt if there was ever sold such a stamp for such a price. Apart from that, we should not overestimate the influence of our little club. We have a few hundred members and even less active users. Would that scare a eBay seller who has made his online business his prime income? Last but not least: what potential collector? Someone who believes a simple prexie of which literally billions were printed is worth hundreds of dollars is not a real collector. Or at least not one who has any knowledge of stamps. No, I think this is someone who is trying to make some money with some thriftstore finds and the help of chatgpt and good luck to him (or her). If he has any success let me know and I will be doing the same, but I do not think there is any chance of that.
Final words, I cannot help but think of the pot calling the kettle black.
I personally try to contact these sellers and tell them what it is worth!
I do this kindly, and try to get them interested in the hobby.
They usually say "You just do not understand" or go away.
I did get one lovely response, and the seller said, "I think this hobby is interesting! I am going to go learn some more...)
THAT, is (hopefully) one collector gained.
-Ari
EDIT: I think that this post is meant to show how honest our sellers are, but I guess some people really do not know better, OR they see those junk youtube videos that say this is worth $$$
Jeremy, you're entitled to your opinion of course. How would you have handled this situation? Would you have ignored it? By doing so, you would be letting a fraudulent/inexperienced/hopeful seller take advantage of potential new collectors. That would be far more damaging to the hobby than a group of seasoned collectors talking about them, which is all we did. Have you never attended a club meeting where members talked about seller Joe Bloggs, asking if they were legit, talking about their items and prices?
There's no evidence that anything said on this forum made them remove their listings, and suggesting that we have the power to do so is overly flattering to SoR. I'm very happy that they've apparently ceased trading.
As for membership here, we have a core of collaborative, communicative members, and a huge number that pop in and say nothing. We also have a large number that use SoR as a selling platform and nothing else. Members come and go.
It appears that Sarge has left the building, so we're now talking to ourselves. Members come and go!
It appears this was some sort of goodbye. Some parts of the discussion board are open for everyone to see, if this is as well I do not know and it is therefore most likely our replies have not been read by Sarge/Jeremy. Like Dave said, members come and go but for the record, we currently have 1078 members, from which 96 new ones since January. I cannot quickly see how many have resigned, but there are no signs of a dramatic decline.
....I guess....goodbye Sarge. Sorry that got you riled up.
It was good chatting with him while he was here!
Too bad...

I just searched the member's section and it appears Sarge is no longer with us. We didn't always agree but I had many useful interactions with him and occasionally messages. We cannot afford to loose members of his caliber! I really wish that people could disagree without getting so upset. We have many members who don't post opinions in the discussion area like they used to and that's a real shame!!!
It's a shame that adults can't have a discussion without someone getting upset, but there you go. Sarge was advocating doing nothing about dodgy sellers, which is something I can never agree with, but I wouldn't leave a forum because of the difference in opinion.
He was an active member. I sent some items to him at his home address in the states.
It appears that 1899 has also left (again).
SARGE, was one of our best members, has a many good chats with him, and he mentored and sent me many us stamps.
I will miss him on this thread.
90% of our members read and do not comment! (My statistic...)
-Ari
1898 left, 1899 left. I guess we should expect to see 1900 soon!
It's such a shame that there's over-reactions like this
I agree Bob was a good contributing member. Is out out of like for someone who knows him well, to contact him and try to urge him back?
Bob? Who are we now referring to? As far as I know Sarge = Jeremy and 1898/1899 = David

It's not important but David was actually a member using the name Camel for a short time as well between 1898 and 1899. I feel bad about losing the two members. 1899 and I didn't agree on much but he was a very legitimate expert in his field and he will be missed for that reason. Losing Sarge was a real blow, I wish someone could get him to change his mind - a major loss to the club!!
1899 gone as well? Sorry to hear that.
.
I kinda feel like I'm Patient Zero on this so I'll share my thoughts.
With 1899, I'm still scratching my head. There was a thread by Ari, where it said "ISO", he basically asked what that meant.
I responded with some like, "hey, Dawg..get with the program.." or something similar.
I honestly did not intent that to be an insult in anyway. Truth be told, that was my attempt to be collegial or dare I say even "cool".
When I saw his initial reaction I was even like "hey man just joking" but it spiraled from there.
Hey, 1899. If you read this I honestly meant no offense.

Take a look at their offerings. Many clearly used stamps labeled "mint". Ridiculous prices. I know, I know....even remotely serious buyers will just stay away, but this is disgusting (IMO).
