SOTN
I'd out that in my state cancel collection!
Nice!
So what is everyone's definition of a SON (or SOTN) cancel ?

A stamp where the CANCELLATION is right in the middle of the stamp, not stamp plus piece and not a precancel' in my opinion!
@1899
That is a pre=cancel.not a SON or SOTN
My interpretation is a circular cancellation mark on the stamp which clearly shows the time, date and location of its use.
STON = any canx entirely on the front of a stamp, could be a precancel, hand scribed canx, CDS etc., and more etc!
I might be wrong, but it appears to me he now has a hat on!
United States of America, Scott number R163r
SOTN only applies to the rubber stamp "STR. GOLD"
Flat press printed stamp
Str. Gold was built in 1883.
Later sold to the Petaluma & Santa Rosa Railroad Company
Not for sale or trade!
Condition: space filler
Str. stands for steamer!

At last...an example of a SON cancellation !!!
A SOTN is up to the original poster, there was no instructions, everything I posted I think are real interesting SOTNs!
USA Scott# 3098

Pardon me boys . . .
These SOTN gems turn up in strange places. While sorting through a box of old (1950-1960 era) Swedish used on paper, what should appear but this:
Canada Scott #354 - 10th anniversary of the International Civil Aviation Organization commemorative, with a socked-on-the-nose Railway Post Office cancel for the Montreal and Brockville R. P. O., period dated 23 June 1955. The stamp was issued June 1, 1955.
A question: What does the number 25 above the date signify in the cancellation? I am not an RPO specialist. Is anyone able to offer an explanation?

I may have posted this one before. I never get tired of looking at it though.

Key Characteristics of a SOTN:
Centering:
The postmark is placed squarely on the stamp, as if it were "socked on the nose".
Completeness:
The entire postmark, including the date and location, should be fully readable, though this can be challenging with small stamps or large postmarks.
Neatness:
The centered placement provides a clean and attractive look to the stamp.
Information:
The postmark clearly shows the date, time, and town where the stamp was postmarked.
"though this can be challenging with small stamps"

Antonio,
That Audrey Hepburn stamp is really cool. Look how the cancel appears to go UNDER her chin.
Hi Randy,
From my own point of view I wouldn't call those the Key Characteristics but the ideal characteristics.
I can still appreciate a SON cancel even if it isn't quite ideal (and will prefer them over other cancels for stamps in my collection).

Just a question - If the post mark is spread over two stamps is it technically a SOTN?
Very nice margins on that Norway #1

Not all in my definition of SON (or SOTN or SoN) cancels, but having seen some the others' examples in these threads, they will fit nicely won't they

Is it that the stamp is lacking color, or is it just that opaque?
, also, what a beautiful date! Dec/12, my birthday!
Hi Rodolfo,
This is an image I made along time ago. At the time I didn't know how to rebalance the colors. The glare coming from the mount the stamp is in doesn't help but I have rebalanced the colors in this new image. The general blurry or bleary state of the cancel suggests this stamp was soaked in hot water which may have reduced the brightness of the color somehwat.

Lucky you being born on the day of la Guadelupana.
