I inherited stamp albums last summer and I have caught the collecting bug since first opening them. Most of the collection is pre-1960, and I've been making up ground as I can.

So, I'm relatively new at all this still.

I have a few questions about mounting new and used stamps in the albums. My acquired albums have many hinged mint and used stamps stacked in spaces. Is that good? Should I continue the practice with new purchases?

Of course with MNH stamps, I have not been hinging them; instead, I mount them in Showgard Mounts. However, when I get a MH, I sometimes hinge it to the album page since it is more cost effective and the "damage" was already done. Is that an acceptable practice?

I'd appreciate understanding better how to best care for these mini-beauties. Thank you.

re: Collecting mint and used

Connie,
first,and foremost,it's your collection,do it your way.
"stacked"-- do you mean a stamp hinged on top of another, with the hinge stuck to the stamp underneath it? Or offset so hinge is on page, not the underlying stamp?
A hinge stuck on the face of a stamp would leave a "hinge mark" ,doing irreparable damage.
I presume you are refering to duplicates of the same stamp. If so,I've seen many older album pages with extras, varieties,or dupes, hinged next to the proper stamp on the page.Even some pages with many, many dupes hinged around the page,,but never on top of one another,,,stacked.
I see a lot of stock pages with overlapped stamps (to save space) that also give me the willies.Surely this creates the possible damageing to the stamps beneath, migration of gum, ink,or perf damage with the slideing in and out of jammed in stamps.
I changed over to my Vario stock pages for all my stamp needs. Both mint and used.Always with spaces between each stamp, and narry a hinge in sight.I you find a previously hinged stamp in my albums,I recieved it that way.I didnt do it.

If you do use hinges, you can turn a packet of 1000 hinges into 2000 ,by simply cutting them in half. You dont need a really big hinge to hold that stamp in place,,and if nothing else,it will leave a much smaller hinge mark. This will upgrade the condition from hinge mark to a lightly hinged condition( a little more desirable-value wise).

Connie, no reason not to hinge an already hinged stamp. By stacking, I assume you mean having several stamps hinged and overlapping? If so, it seems a common practice in earlier collectors, especially, and serves the purpose of organizing although you surrender the quick visuals of cancels and such.

be sure to store your albums upright so that there's no additional pressure

if you have lots of duplicates of a single stamp or series, consider inserting a page in which you can display them, especially if you want to highlight cancels or color varieties.

we can see that you have jumped in with both feet and a pair of tongs. nice to have you so excited and enjoying it

re: Collecting mint and used

By stacking I meant that one stamp is hinged onto another stamp's hinge, directly beneath the top stamp; it is not hinged directly on the stamp. This saves room, but I wonder if it is good for the stamps.

That's a great idea to cut the hinges in half to save on the expense and to lessen the hinge mark.

Thanks for the ideas.

re: Collecting mint and used

With my Scott Intnl vol. I pretty much have to stack them on some countries (i.e. Germany) mainly because of space and all the watermarks. What I do is use the whole hinge and write the Sc.# of each on the front side of the part of the hinge that is hinged to the stamp so when you lift the stamp up you see the Sc.# and also there's no writing on the stamp. I I place one under another I try to place it so that you can still read the # of the previous stamp. In oder to stop stacking I started making my own albums
with a space for each variety. Just that alone will probably take the rest of my life. lol.
