I have a mix of several pounds of worldwide issues on paper, some older, but many newer.
As a result, I would be interested in any information regarding the soaking of self adhesive stamps from countries other than the U.S. Specifically, Germany, Netherlands and other European countries would be of prime importance, but information for others would also be appreciated.

Thanks,

as far as I know, almost all Dutch selfadhesives soak well. I have not had any problems yet.

Recent Australia and private post stamps from New Zealand can give you problems.

I have had NO problem with any of the S/A stamps from any country in the United Kingdom, Western Europe, Africa, Asia, Canada or New Zealand. The odd stamp from France may give you a problem, but if I remember correctly they are some of the Christmas issues, greeting stamps and definitives.

I cannot comment on S/A stamps from other countries in Europe as I haven't tried soaking stamps from Eastern European countries.

My suggestion is 'if in doubt, trim closely and leave on paper', or if you have several copies of the same issue from a country, try soaking just one of the stamps.

i'll only add that any of the Frama labels, especially from Spain, don't soak. I'm less certain about some of the other western Europe Frama labels, but i'd be careful there. US stuff of recent vintage will give you fits; Linn's periodically runs a list of the problem stamps, and it's growing daily.

re: Non U.S. self adhesive soaking information.

Thanks to all. This info really helps. Most of my soaking has been either recent U.S. or world pre-adhesive, neither causing very many problems, as I am a devotee of the naptha route for U.S. and a hot soak with dash of mild detergent for the others.

Cheers,

The Spanish postal pictorial labels you MUST NOT try to soak. I have no info on the broadly similar "stamps" from Portugal or Germany. Note that these are not like Framas in that the postage is printed onto a pre-printed label rather than in a frama where the postage and frame is printed onto a paper roll in the sameway as a metermark.

UK Machins note that newest issues have anti soaking slits which means that bits are missing after soaking. Folklore has it that it is possible to soak these but try very common ones first.

French definitives particularly the the full face with rosette and the Liberte,Egalite ,Fraternite are difficult too.

With all these best to buy some cheap kiloware and experiment with the commonest values.
