My spouse has recently started concentrating in earnest on her Sweden collection. In researching some of the stamps, she has come across some interesting information on the engraver Czeslaw Slania, not the least of which is an extensive site dedicated to his work by Ann Mette Heindorff.

The question that I would like to ask this accomplished group is this: Why is it that Slania appears to have gained all of this notice when there are other engravers with what some might call equally impressive portfolios?

Secondly, are there any collectors of Slania's works here on Stamporama, and if so, how have you pursued this specialized collection?

Any and all answers, above and beyond what is available on the Heindorff site would be most appreciated.

re: Czeslaw Slania

From what I have read, Czeslaw Slania was the world's most productive engraver. He is noted in the Guinness Book of World Records as the champion engraver of all time.

re: Czeslaw Slania

He is responsible for a huge number of stamps, many of which are sublimely beautiful. A member of my local philatelic society has a Slania collection, and he figures he is over half way through it. As far as I know, he just works off of lists and fills in the spots as he can. For now he is using stockpages. It is impressive to see a lot of them in one place.

A few facts of trivia for anyone who doesn't know much about Slania:

There are several Slania study groups and email lists. One based in Milwaukee Wisconsin was around for more than 20 years, but disbanded recently when they couldn't find anyone to take over the leadership.

I've heard his name pronounced several different ways. I've been told that it should be pronounced CHESS-wahv SWAN-ee-ah. Any native speakers who can improve on this pronunciation, please do so.

If I actively collected modern-era stamps, I think a Slania collection might be one of my interests. As it is, I have quite a few, because they just catch my eye.

I'm not sure that you can point to other stamp engravers with equally impressive portfolios, but I would love to find out otherwise.

Also like caracaturist Al Hirschfield, he would hide names of friends and relatives within some stamps. He even put an image of himself on Sweden Scott 994. Here is a link to those pages from Ann's website.

Ann Mette Heindorff was a member of this group until her death. She made many comments about Slania, you might try to search our history and see if anything pops up.

Valarie, thanks for bringing up Ann Mette. She is truly a nice person and a great friend. This brings back some memories of Dakota, a member of stamporama that sign of with handshakes. He passed away a few years in 2005. Do you remember him? I will miss them both.

For those who might not be aware, Anne Mette Heindorff passed away last year after a long fight against brain cancer. She was indeed a nice person and good friend. I miss her a lot.
