France used to do a very nice line in maximum cards - perhaps they still do. I picked up a dozen or so from the Vincennes Philatelie stand at Stampex last year.
Here is one, commemorating Brother Alfred Stanke, a Polish-born German monk whose good deeds during the war are well worth reading about.

seriesAnd to add to this Maxi card - for me- is the fact that my father's ancestors, the 'van der Veer' tribe, came from Culemborg! In the 1950's my sister back and I went to Culemborg and crossed the river - which was at the foot of the Veer Street- in a hand- rope- pulled ferry boat!

Maxicards now suffer from the same perfectionistic conditionism that has driven so much of stamp collecting to MNHOG, and that eventually destroyed so much of the FDC segment of the hobby: the card subject and stamp subject and cancellation must all match, and the most highly-prized items are commercially contrived, unaddressed, and never passed thru the mail (except as cargo).
That, in turn, means that 'collecting' maxicards consists, primarily, of two activities: subscribing to new releases from the postal authorities that publish them, and backfilling from the secondary market.
For myself, I get a lot more enjoyment from the serendipity of finding, for example, a picture postcard of some Alpine mountain bearing the postmark of its own postal substation. Or, similarly, from finding a picture postcard where the subject of the stamp and the subject of the card are closely related. Yes, these are no less contrived, but at least there is the hope that they might be a little unique, and originated from ordinary use, eg, they are a little less 'philatelic'.
Yet another alternative is to collect the output of the small private maxicard publishers.
But I think that sterility & standardization have served to limit the enthusiasm for maxicards.

I agree and point out that it runs into the often quoted meme;
"What is prepared specifically for the collector,
is not a collectible."
Sooner or later, such contrived items are discovered
to exist in such gigantic quantities that
much of the "seeking and finding" enjoyment of collecting
is diminished to just purchasing from a seller/manufacturer.

I would agree that commercial mass-produced cards fall into that category, and I don't find them particularly interesting.
However I do think that those people who subscribe to new issues, and then go to a great deal of trouble to look for an appropriate postcard ( new or old ) and enhance the stamp by using it through the post with maximum conformance do produce interesting items that have appeal. Most of such items are in fact unique.
Perhaps they appeal in the same way that advertising envelopes or First Day Covers used commercially as marketing tools do. I don't specifically seek them out, but I do retain the ones that come to me.

I strongly believe that the crux of the matter is the set of guidelines ("rules and regulations").
An overhaul could inject new energy and passion for maximaphily.
My proposed non-traditional maximaphily contains the traditional maximaphily as a subset.

Only the one with 4 stamps can be considered (by the purists) non-compliant with the traditional maximaphily "rules and regulations".
They would narrow-mindedly criticize it, because "a maxicard should have only 1 stamp".
In this maxicard, the 4 stamps are evoking a story, a historical event.
To me, it's OK, even if the drummer stamp would be subject-concordant with the postcard, for example.
Or the Declaration poster.
Or the rider.
The word LOVE is the visually-concordant subject in the first maxicard.
The lit candle, 'cause Happy Birthday is an abstract subject "forbidden" (verbatim; ad litteram) by the traditional maximaphily.
The phrase "PRESERVE THE ENVIRONMENT".
In my non-traditional maximaphily, abstract subjects are allowed and even welcome.
Love, as a sentiment.
