I've started organizing my New Zealand accumulation this morning. In the past I have used either a preprinted album or have created my album pages as I go using AlbumEasy. With this New Zealand accumulation, I have been thinking of using Bill Steiner's album pages. I think he does a nice job. I normally use Scott black mounts and cut the mount to size, which has worked well. When I have been thinking about using Bill Steiner's pages in the past, I have come to the conclusion that it will be difficult to get the black mounts that I use in the space on the page that is allowed on Bill Steiner's pages.

So my question is for those of you who have used Bill Steiner's pages. What types of mounts have you found works well? How have you handled odd shaped stamps like the triangle stamps that NZ has used in many places?

Regards ... Tim.

Hi Tim
I use Bill's pages and black Hawid or Prinz mounts.I buy the strips and cut them to the size I want and have had no problems.
Apart from the first few pages I printed and the spaces for the stamps were a little small.I changed the print paper size to A4 and it gives me plenty of room to mount my stamps..
Can't show you as I am in the UK at the moment.

Thanks Brian, that helps. It hadn't occurred to me to try to manipulate the way the printed page fits on the page. I didn't know that you could do that when dealing with a PDF.

So I signed up with Bill Steiner and have down loaded all the NZ pages.

Glad to hear that you finally made it to the UK. Have a great trip.

re: A question on using mounts with Bill Steiner's Album pages

If the A4 setting doesn't work, here are a few tips for getting a good mounting and alignment.

I generally first mount the middle stamp on the top row of the page. It is best to shift upwards with the mount. That way you don't run out of room at the bottom of the page. Then I complete the top row, and move to the second, etc. Usually the bottom of the mount rests on the bottom of the printed box for the stamp, and the top of the mount protrudes above it. Note, that I find that it is the vertically printed stamps that offer the spacing problem with Steiner's pages. The horizontal stamps are usually all right with the vertical plane.

This next step is for both vertical and horizontally printed stamps. For the middle mount, center it on the horizontal plane. For the stamps to the left of the middle, the right side of the mount should be on the right side of the box. For the stamps to the right of the middle, the left side of the mount should line up with the left side of the box. The stamps will be mounted evenly throughout the page if you do it that way.

After you mount some stamps on a couple of pages, you'll get accustomed to how those pages are arranged, and it'll go fine from that point.

Also, when your printer dialogue box comes up, look for options check boxes that are automatically checked, which you can try unchecking (or checking, if they're not already), such as Fit to Page, Fit to Print Area, Actual Size, etc.

I use Bill's pages too, but I was lucky... I bought his CD when it contained PageMaker files as well as PDFs. I used PageMaker (now I use InDesign) to rearrange the pages, moving the stamp descriptions BELOW the frames, adding Scott numbers, plus color info, etc. It's a lot of work, but I finally have the album that I want.

Sadly I can't share the pages because of Scott's copyright enforcement policies, which is regrettable.

I to use Bills pages, I obtained mine when they were up on the web for free ,these are great for collectors that only collect up to a certain year as I have no updates, but for most of the countries I collect I have all the pages I need.
Plus all his free pages I have burnt to disc and can print off any that I need ,I also have Pagemaker which allows me to redesign pages if I wish.

New Zealand with Bill Steiner pages and clear mounts

Well, you asked for opinions about mounts and Bill Steiner pages, so here is my little different take on it. Cool

I use clear mounts. The focus, then is on the stamp and not on the mount "framing" the stamp- as with a black mount.

Clear mounts are much more forgiving in that respect, as the eye is not drawn so much to it- rather the eye views the stamp.

I have my entire WW 1840-1940 collection- some 6000 pages+- on Bill Steiner pages- all using clear mounts.

I have no argument with black mounts- they look nice indeed. But, for me, the less exacting requirements of clear mounts and the focus on the stamp won the day. Happy

While I create my own pages, I too prefer clear mounts for the same reasons mentioned above. Plus I cannot see a straight line nor do I full use of my hand so with the clear mounts I have no problems if they go over the black boxes on my pages. And once in the binders under sheet protectors you'd really have to give a close look to see irregularities in the clear mounts. With the black mounts my collection would look like crap.

re: A question on using mounts with Bill Steiner's Album pages

I vote for black (in most cases). I learned when I was selling some of my landscape photos that dark or even black frames and mattes greatly enhanced the photographs, not that they needed enhancing! Big Grin

In artistic design, that dark colours create negative space which increases the prominence of lighter elements. Black, in fact, is the absence of reflected light. To say that a black mount takes the focus away from the stamp is to deny the evidence in nature. For example, on a dark night the moon, in any phase but the new (black) moon, pops right out at you. You just can't miss it. The same moon seen in daytime is far less visible, and in fact can be missed entirely by the viewer.

Of course, a white background, which is the opposite of black in that it is the combined reflection of all colours of light, can work the same way. An example would a field of new-fallen snow where a lone coyote is hunting for voles, and is clearly visible to anyone who is looking. Arctic predators take advantage of this — they obviously paid attention in science class — by turning white in winter. Military units training for arctic warfare wear white camouflage suits and even cover their weapons with white material.

It seems to me that the "best" mounts for a given stamp could be any colour that complements the stamp rather than detracts from it. Dark toned stamps might best be mounted with hinges or clear mounts and at most a thin frame line. Light toned stamps might look best against a dark background. Most stamps are neither very light nor very dark; I personally like them against dark backgrounds. I think this page of mine looks darned nice!:

Now here's an idea! How about mounts made in a variety of colours? Having the choice of only black or clear mounts is like going into a frame shop and being offered only white or clear mattes and frames.

While I'm at it, I've got to say (physical handicaps acknowledged) that unevenly cut and mounted stamp mounts look worse than no mounts at all. I think of stamps as miniature, artistic artifacts that deserve the most attractive possible display.

re: A question on using mounts with Bill Steiner's Album pages

Having done quite a bit of photography myself and put many photos/paintings in for mounting and framing, I see the visual impact that this has.

I have experimented with hand drawn coloured frame lines around a few mounted blocks of mine. I've firstly mounted the stamps in black mounts to enhance the perfs. I've then used complementary colours just drawn with artist pencils.

This effect, combined with an attractive page layout, is quite striking.

I have also tried the coloured background method shown on your 50c Canadian (this looks great by the way). Choosing the right background colour is important though, as one can easily detract from the design of the stamp.

I should stress that any coloured paper used for such a background should of course be acid free.
