I was just reading this article about the US post office opening up postal service in Staples stores.

http://investorplace.com/investorpolitics/postal-workers-staples-spls-stock/#.U3o5XyimV3E

Canada Post started donig this with Drug Stores like Shoppers Drug Mart back in the 1990's.

It is taking the US along time to catch up with other countries.

re: US Postal Service

There are stores down here in the South, called Bealls, that also offer the postal services, or used to at least. Don't most, or all of the pack and ship places offer postal service. I seem to remember using the one closest to the house when I was still working to send off different packages via USPS. That was before you could sit at home and use the on-line services, of course.

re: US Postal Service

I live in Vancouver, and previously lived in Prince George, in the geographical centre of B.C. I have normally used postal sub-stations, operated by businesses, rather than actual post offices. For the most part, the service has been adequate. However, in the last few decades, the service in both post offices and the sub-stations has deteriorated. I used to think of post offices as formal, high-security extensions of the federal government. That was certainly what they were when I was growing up in New Mexico. The employees were knowledgeable, and catered to stamp collectors. That just isn't the case any longer.

I have occasionally been appalled by the cavalier attitudes of letter carriers and other employees. The most egregious fault I've ever witnessed occurred just a few blocks from my apartment. An Canada Post employee was loading bags of mail onto a truck from a sub-station. The employee looked more like an East Hastings Street homeless drug addict than someone with an actual job. I saw him as he was leaving his truck to return to the sub-station. The back of the truck was open, and a bag of mail was left sitting on the pavement. Anyone could have picked it up. Unbelievable.

USPS has stated that opening contract stations is one of their targets for reducing their debt. It will enable them to close under-performing post offices.

re: US Postal Service

I have no complaints with the USPS.

As a peripatetic, philatelic foreigner, I’ve been in a lot of US post offices and pumped a lot of mail into the USPS over the years. Never had an unpleasant experience, not one, and I’m certainly not the most loveable member in Stamporama. Often remarked to my wife, who shares these views, how much the typical US post office reflects the character of the typical American: big smile, warm handshake, helpful, friendly, eager to chat and scrupulously honest.

No, I’m not smoking opium, nor am I naïve.

Absolutely I do not share Bobstamp’s opinion of the “cavalier” attitudes of Canadian letter carriers and other employees, or their manner of work dress. Been in too many countries where the working outfit is black uniform fitted with an array of weaponry, and my identification is verified by a muscle-bound bouncer releasing the lock as I pass through a double-door security entrance.

I love living in Canada where a mailbag can be left on the road without fear of it being highjacked. Canada Post, as well as commercial delivery firms, have occasionally left
expensive deliverables on my doorstep because they wouldn’t fit into the mail box and no one was home. At the moment, the big local issue in my town (Victoria on Vancouver Island) is the closing down of our island’s only “young-offenders facility” (jail) because of a lack of sufficient inmates - we’re talking lost jobs here!

With risk of offending American members of Stamporama, my concern is that the “securocrat”, a behemoth astride the USA, is trying to turn that nation into a fortress impregnable to terrorism, and that Canada will find it very difficult to avoid the spillover.

Think I recall a world and a time wherein the lowest common denominator wasn’t considered the human norm.
