One of the Many Reasons I Love Stamp Collecting is that I learn something new everyday. I came a cross a stamp from Switzerland that had a very odd image on it of a man swinging what looked to me like a fishing pole with a knob on the end and other men with paddles. It's a traditional game played in the German speaking area of Switzerland called Hornussen.

Bob,
I also wondered about that stamp a year or so ago and like you, wanted to know just what that was all about, then found the site on YouTube. As fast and far as the "Hornet" is traveling it's amazing the team in the field doesn't wear bullet-proof vests and helmets. That thing is flying faster than a Pelota in Jai-Alai and looks just as hard. I've seen several of the Jai-Alai players hit by the Pelota and they usually hit the floor pretty quick when that happens.

I don't know how they hit the thing with that flexible pole that's about 8' long. I have a hard time hitting a golf ball off a tee.

Here is another Swiss stamp that I love. Could you imagine playing goalie without a mask. Hard to believe that's how they played. I do remember as a kid watching Gump Worsley on the Minnesota North Stars playing without a mask. He was once asked, why he doesn't wear a mask and he said "My face is my mask". When he played for the NY Rangers he would face 40-50 shots a game. When asked what team gave him the most trouble, he replied "The New York Rangers". Sounds like he and Yogi Berra or Bob Euker would have gotten along fine.
