My husband and I are on vacation in PEI, Canada. Yesterday we were at Ripley's Believe it or not Odditorium. They had on display several pieces of mail from one guy who spent 29 years trying to find even one false claim in the Ripley's cartoons. He sent 20 some thousand pieces of mail all over the world looking for verification. He received over 11, 000 responses, over 4, 000 of his letters were returned and over 8,000 were lost or no response made. He kept a scrapbook of it all and, never being able to disprove a single claim, sold his collection to Ripley's!

The envelopes were cool. Often, not knowing the address of a person in a Ripley's cartoon, he'd just have it addressed to a city and it would say "please deliver to" with an arrow pointing to a cutout of the person featured in the Ripley's claim that he had pasted to the envelope.

My first instinct, look at the stamps! My comment to my husband, "I bet those covers would be so collectible!"

(And for bonus points, he knew what I was talking about when I said covers!"

re: Connecting my PEI Vacation to my Hobby

Was able to tie our little vacation into my stamp collecting again today. We visited the Cavendish post office where they had several covers as well as FDC's for sale. They were on the expensive side so I didn't get them BUT they did have L.M. Montgomery postcards. I selected one, listed all the Montgomery and Anne of Green Gables sites we visited today and selected the Northumberland Straight stamp from the Haunted Canada series for postage. Going to be a cool addition to my collection when it gets to my place Happy

Side note, learned today that Cavendish is the only place in PEI that cancels its own mail. It's because of their unique Anne themed cancel, all the others get cancelled in Halifax.
