We all have our serious collections, but we all have our little guilty pleasure pure fun collections. What are yours?

I have three. Mine are my mini schnauzers, my Danish advertising pairs and Japan used singles. There aren't many schnauzer stamps so when I find one - especially one with natural, uncropped ears, I squeal with glee like a little kid on Christmas morning! The Danish advertising pairs are tough to find, but each one I find is a treat. And the used Japan singles are just so beautiful. I had a friend send an envelope of them and it got me started working on my Japan collection and now I just can't stop! I started re-doing the entire collection. They are my philatelic "potato chips." You can't do just one!

Train related stamps, covers, cancellations, perfins, etc. Also, I like postage meters with railroad and old time radio shows advertisements. I like to call this, as you say "pure fun collecting" - Philatelic Cross-Dressing. I am working on an article for the Texas Philatelist about it.

re: What is your go to "Sheer FUN" collection?

Where to start; I used to collect anything that "tickled my interest" so I had small collections of mint multiples (blocks; strips), unusual cancels on cover, USSR space theme stamps, cancels with dates or places significant to me or my family (e.g., birthdays), ship cancels, British postal stationery (KEVII to KGVI), UN commemorative cards, Hawaii postal cards, Disney souvenir sheets, freaks and errors, ... Never went out of my way to collect these as I do with my Hong Kong, Queen Victoria Empire, or British Treaty Ports. However, some have developed into nice sized collections (postal stationery, for example) whereas others languished as a handful of items. I've sold almost all of these extra areas but I continue to acquire new areas that just interest me.

Several countries have permitted commercial advertising with their stamps. These can be on stamp-sized tabs with the advertisement that alternate on the sheets or booklet panes with the stamps, or on the covers of booklets and such. It is an interesting sideline.

I have fallen for Japanese stamps as well. Years back, I ordered a large packet from my favorite dealer to start my collection, and then another one, and so on. Now I have Japanese duplicates coming out of my ears! I haven't ordered a packet in quite a few years, so I am missing the more recent stamps. I was drooling over Philatelia's recent Japanese approval books, knowing that I am missing a lot of the stamps in them. I am trying to show some restraint and not make any more purchases right now because I have piles and piles of stamps to go through and put away, but I might have to give into those Japanese stamps!!

My "fun" collection is giraffes on stamps. I like giraffes and I started out buying just two little toy figures in Hamleys Toy Store in London England. I wanted a keepsake, and the giraffes were so cute.

Then it turned into a herd of giraffes. Figurines, stuffed toys, candle holders, pictures, then of course stamps and postcards.

It's hard to find more stamps with giraffes on them, but I'm still looking. I don't know how many I have right now, maybe 100 or so.

Friends and family even found giraffe birthday cards for me, and gift wrapping paper. I save small squares of it in an album along with the cards and stamps.

Giraffes are such a fun topic! I took my 11 year old nephew to lion country safari by Palm Beach and they have a Giraffe feeding station. OMG he was absolutely mesmerized! It was a delight watching the look of awe and wonder on his face as he fed them. Priceless!

re: What is your go to "Sheer FUN" collection?

Basically, I consider my entire collection my "Sheer FUN Collection"! I collect some areas with more seriousness and intensity such as my US Bureau precancels, German area, Latin America, Southeast Europe, space, and worldwide through 1969 but I am most serious about having fun with whatever I collect. Some more lighthearted areas are airships and biplanes on stamps, insects, primitive man, and trains.

One of my pet peaves has always been to refer to a collector or a collection as "serious" when what the true meaning is most likely "high dollar". Heck, I was a "serious" collector when I was 12 years old even though I didn't spend much money... serious about enjoying my collection and learning as much as I possibly could about my stamps and those which I would never be able to afford.

I know what you're saying, Pathman. I also feel that ALL of my collections are "fun." And the term "serious" is the best I could think of to differentiate between my collections where I study and flyspeck and work to assemble an exhibit quality book versus the collection where I just pick one of each pretty stamp with no intent to study perf varieties, watermarks, cancels, usages and so on.

Do you know of a better word to describe that type of collection? I'm happy to learn new terms Happy

I just thought of one - how about calling those the "studious" collections?
How about "lighthearted" instead of sheer fun collections?

I just wanted to add I have a friend who has just a fun collection. She doesn't do anything with it, she doesn't look up any values or any catalog numbers or anything. All that she does it put it in a stock book to look at like a big picture book. Now that is a fun collection, no work involved Happy

re: What is your go to "Sheer FUN" collection?

My "Sheer FUN" stamp collections would be:

1) What I call Beyond BOB for US - that's a collection of examples of stamps that I DON'T collect (like revenues, Cinderellas, etc.). You can see it here (although I need to update the scans): http://www.larsdog.com/stamps/beyond.htm

I'm just about finished with it (it has grown to SIX albums), so I started on ...

2) One from Every Country. I used the Smithsonian PDF file as a start, but I've been adding a few items to suit my needs. I don't even have any of that scanned yet, but I have the album over 80% complete.

I've been busy doing the same thing with coins: One From Every Country. It's a lot of fun, not too serious, and not terribly expensive.

re: What is your go to "Sheer FUN" collection?

Philatelia,

I just noticed you used the word "serious" to describe some of your collections... when I talked about my pet peave I wasn't referring to your used of that word... what I had in mind was the philatelic press which occasionally describes a collection or a particular collector as "serious" when what they really mean is "very valuable" or "well-heeled".

I think the description of a "serious" collector or collection is any collector who enjoys his stamps and places them in some sort of logical philatelic order in an album, stock book, cards, or pages rather than stuffing them in the dresser drawer and derives a sense of pleasure and enjoyment from their study. Anyone who reads and posts on this site is certainly a "serious" collector with "serious" collections. I guess my main point is that "serious" does not necessarily equate to valuable in financial terms. I am mainly "serious" about having FUN with my stamps and I think the great majority or members of this forum feel the same way!

I apologize if you interpreted my remarks in any other way or as an attack on your use of the word... they truly were not meant in that way.

Fun? Fun! Stamp collecting isn't supposed to be fun. The Bible says nothing about stamp collecting being "fun". Ergo, it's never fun! But, yeah, I have a "fun" collection, which means that I don't pay a lot of attention to it: Chickens on Stamps & Covers, inspired by my friend George, a Leghorn rooster that I had as a pet, and even participated in his birth. Here he is in a photograph, ca. 1953-ish, with his harem. The Rhode Island Red hen is George's wife, Lucy.

And here is a Vietnam stamp featuring a portrait of George. How did the Vietnamese postal people know about George? I don't remember telling any Viet Cong or North Vietnamese soldiers about George. Actually, they didn't seem to want to talk to me at all!

For me it is Rugby stamps (which means mainly stamps from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and a few from the UK, France and Argentina - which surprise, surprise are the main rugby (union) nations) and medieval theme (castles, illuminations, vikings etc.)

I also try to collect Dutch stamps cancelled on the former island Wieringen but I do not have many because I lack the patience to go through loads of stamps with barely readable cancels...

Finally I enjoy Belgian precancels. Received a bunch of them that contained many early hand cancels I had not seen before.

re: What is your go to "Sheer FUN" collection?

I guess that the only album that I have that is "sheer fun" is a thick "ELBE" three ring binder that I have a collection of US pre-cancels state by state and city or town by city and town. If I notice some difference in the overprint, I mount both side by side among the rest from that state. I seldom seek more, but do come across them, sometimes in bulk.
If I find the same cancel on more than one different stamp, again, both get mounted alongside one another.
It is an accumulation for simple relaxation. no goal and no concern about completion, just a very large number os pre-canceled stamps.
At the back there is a second large oup of the usually 2p Wildings that were used to pay the document tax, semi sorted by the agency that collected the bill and tax from its customers. There are a few Machins that were also used as revenues there as well, but since that form of tax collection was changed, not so many.

Zipper,

That is certainly a fun place to go and a great start, but I would argue that Newspaper (Periodical) stamps were for POSTAGE and that the documentary and private die stamps were for TAXES, and thus revenue stamps.

I know, a bad image... I need to dig a bit to find this cover and scan it properly!

My "Sheer Fun" collection is covers about automotive history. Above is an airmail letter from the REO Motor Car Company to California. REO stands for Ransom E Olds, who started Oldsmobile. He agreed for Oldsmobile to join General Motors and soon found himself voted out. He was forbidden to use the "Olds" name in the car business so he dusted himself off and started REO. This eventually became the Diamond Reo truck company.

I love to find correspondence like this from old line car companies as well as small town dealer corner cards, especially with a line drawing of a car on it. One of my other favorites is a bill from the local Ford dealer to a lady for repairs to her Ford Model T.

Most of what I have isn't big dollar, and was mainly found in big cover hoards.

Jansimon

I was interested to read your post about Rugby stamps. Can I respectfully ask how a Dutchman got interested in Rugby? - presumably the interest is not restricted to stamps? Is Rugby Union played in The Netherlands? As a Northerner ( UK ) my interest is Rugby League and as far as I know that is only played outside the UK in Australia,New Zealand,South Africa and France - although a number of players from other countries have migrated.

To those who do not know what Rugby is it is somewhat similar ( but entirely different in the way that it is played ) to American Football ( and Australian Rules football). Rugby League is played with teams of 13, and Rugby Union 15, and there are numerous different rules. Historically Rugby Union was played by the Upper Classes ( and also by the working class in Wales) and was decidedly amateur(played by Gentlemen) while Rugby League ( mainly confined to Yorkshire,Lancashire and Cumberland) was played by working class ruffians ( in the eyes of Rugby Union people) and was professional ( shock, horror !! ) although for all but the top clubs the "wages" were mainly compensation for lost wages in their "proper job".

As with all sports of course money talks - and both games are now Professional in the top flight, although like soccer there are many amateur teams played by all ages from schoolboys ( and girls ) to veteran teams of 50 years and more.

Hi Malcolm,

Of course you can ask. As a matter of fact, rugby (Union) is played in the Netherlands (I guess you know Tim Visser, who now plays in the Six Nations for Scotland?), but it is a small sport. The Netherlands are currently 36th at the world ranking, so we are not playing with the big boys.
My personal interest was sparked by our 11 year old son playing rugby, which makes that we spend many of our Saturdays in club houses of rugby clubs all over the North-West part of the country. We have noted that , especially when the clubs are bigger and playing at a higher level, a high percentage of the membership consists of ex-pats from Great-Britain, South Africa and Australia. Even in our small club we have one South African and in my son's team there is a boy whose mother is English.
Apart from this, I have been to New Zealand about 15 years ago and was introduced to the phenomenon of Super Rugby (Super 12 back then). As you may know, rugby is a sort of religion in the Southern Hemisphere big 3 countries (South Africa, Australia and New Zealand). I was very excited to find out New Zealand had issued stamps for their Super 12 teams such as the Canterbury Crusaders and Otago Highlanders, especially as I got to see matches over there. It was the start of my rugby stamp collection.

I think 'sheer fun' is what I hope to get out of all my collections, although the reason I abandoned GB ten years ago was precisely because the proliferation of silly 'special' stamps and endless permutations of Machins wore away any fun at all.

My 'Sheer fun' collection is what I pass on the wall as I trudge upstairs to bed after a weary day writing stuff for Stamporama - hence the glass-fronted frames. It might be these:

Image Not Found Image Not Found

or these:

Image Not Found Image Not Found

...all of which make up in prettiness what they lack in relevance to any of my other collections. There is also a miniature sheet which I forbear to post here lest it offend the more tender sensibilities among us, featuring the work of the notable Italian artist Paolo Serpieri, who specialises in what might be termed 'gentlemen's interest' drawings. It is supposed to hail from Somalia, but strangely I have never found it used on cover from Mogadishu. I think it is some form of Italian revenge for losing their colony all those decades ago. Google it if you will.

I see. It was the terminology that threw me.
Nice.

Why Denmark ? Is there something special about the ads?

Why Denmark? Because they have a series of ad labels for General Motors and I'm a GM Retiree. They had pics of old radiators - kinda cool! And I also like Danish stamps in general.

re: What is your go to "Sheer FUN" collection?

I have fallen for Japanese stamps as well. Years back, I ordered a large packet from my favorite dealer to start my collection, and then another one, and so on. Now I have Japanese duplicates coming out of my ears! I haven't ordered a packet in quite a few years, so I am missing the more recent stamps. I was drooling over Philatelia's recent Japanese approval books, knowing that I am missing a lot of the stamps in them. I am trying to show some restraint and not make any more purchases right now because I have piles and piles of stamps to go through and put away, but I might have to give into those Japanese stamps!!

re: What is your go to "Sheer FUN" collection?

Heck, I was a "serious" collector when I was 12 years old even though I didn't spend much money... serious about enjoying my collection and learning as much as I possibly could about my stamps and those which I would never be able to afford.

re: What is your go to "Sheer FUN" collection?

It would be nice to see all of the posters here, and those that haven't owned up yet, start a thread of their 'fun' collections so that we can enjoy them. All this talking is making me hungry, and there is nothing like some pics, a bit of info and how much fun they are having with it.

I'm serious.......get those threads started ! Hurry Up

Fun?

Actually, they didn't seem to want to talk to me at all!

re: What is your go to "Sheer FUN" collection?

For me it is Rugby stamps (which means mainly stamps from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and a few from the UK, France and Argentina - which surprise, surprise are the main rugby (union) nations) and medieval theme (castles, illuminations, vikings etc.)

I also try to collect Dutch stamps cancelled on the former island Wieringen but I do not have many because I lack the patience to go through loads of stamps with barely readable cancels...

Finally I enjoy Belgian precancels. Received a bunch of them that contained many early hand cancels I had not seen before.

Londonbus,

I'm not going to start a thread and post pictures because I have images of all my collections on my web site. The first "FUN" collection is what I call Beyond BOB:

http://www.larsdog.com/stamps/beyond.htm

The second is "A Stamp From Every Country":

re: What is your go to "Sheer FUN" collection?

Image Not FoundNewly arrived pre-1950 USA lots and mixes of multi-colored foreign stamps donated to the Holocaust Stamps Project are especially "sheer fun" for me...but in actuality since "sheer" is my last name, every stamp that puts the Project closer to its goal of 11,000,000 is fun to me!

As of Dec. 19, 2014, the new total was at 4,756,256 , 43% of the goal.

As with all sports of course money talks - and both games are now Professional in the top flight, although like soccer there are many amateur teams played by all ages from schoolboys ( and girls ) to veteran teams of 50 years and more.

re: What is your go to "Sheer FUN" collection?

It was the start of my rugby stamp collection.

re: What is your go to "Sheer FUN" collection?
