Here's one of my favorite old covers that I've owned near forever. It's a last day cover for the town of St Thomas, Nevada which was in the way of flood waters that would create the head water for the new Boulder Dam. The town wound up under Lake Mead. The cover is signed by the postmaster and had some interesting enclosures...

It is cool to think that this cover was brought out by boat as the flood waters slowly overtook the town.

And here's a photo of that post office that was also in the cover. The last time I had looked at this cover was before the Internet existed, so I thought I'd try my luck and Google "St Thomas, Nevada". I was pleased to get a lot more than I bargained for. With drought in Nevada, Lake Mead has receded and the remains of the town are now above water and can be explored

And here's what St Thomas looks like today. There is a lot of information and images on line today. I love it when an old story comes to life!

re: Interesting Last Day Cover

Nice, i grew up in Columbia County New York on what was once the Robert Livingston patent about 4 miles from the Clermont post office. I was in high school when it shut down..and then they reopened it again in 1965 for one day for the Fulton Stamp first day. i hope the scans work !Image Not Found
