I was wondering if it is possible to create an email alert based on key words that a buyer may use for the auction/approval functions. It can take the form of a daily email of listings that the system finds for any new listings containing a buyer's listed key words, such as a country name, topical, etc. I suggest a daily email so the system and the buyer does not get overloaded with individual emails. It would only key off the new listings sections of the programs.
Might be a way to help a member see more material that interests them and generate additional sales for sellers. Now, sometimes, thru human error, items are listed in the wrong area and a potential buyer would miss seeing it.
A simple listing of title, catagory ,price and seller should be enough.
Any thoughts/comments appreciated

Letting sellers post about what they have for sale would be much easier.

We are a bureaucracy and bureaucracies exist for the pleasure of doing things the most convoluted way possible. 
That being said, I do not favor either proposal.
IMNSHO ("In my not so humble opinion"), we are already far beyond my favorite acronym on Stamporama, KISS. We already have far too many alerts. Next thing you know, someone is going to want an alert when an alert is pending. Admittedly there are many approval books listed, but I know that both of you have the computer skills to navigate and search the book lists. It really does not take that much time if you know what you are looking for, how to use a search function, and have the intestinal fortitude necessary to overcome the compulsion to toss your PC/Mac through a window when you have difficulty.

I get that, Michael. Ii is no secret that I also support a change in the self promotion rule - not to eliminate it, but to loosen it up a little. For one thing, I see no harm in a subtopic on the DB where SOR auctions and approval books could be promoted; such promotion being limited to that area of the DB similar to the way Buy, Sell and Trade posts are permitted only in a certain section of the DB. I am not in favor of the promotion of non-SOR auctions or stamp stores. Nor do I support the promotion of any site which retails stamps or covers, especially if such entity competes with our site sponsor (Buckacover.com).

It would be so helpful to be able to post a head's up to folks when you are going to close old approval books. Perhaps "last chance - books to close in a week." or something like that. Allowing this type of post might also encourage folks to tidy up old books, so a win win all around.

Maybe the creation of 2 new topics: "Auction Notes and Notices" and "Approval Notes and Notices"
Rules for these two new sections of the DB could be something like:
1) Promotion of your own newly listed auction items and approval books are permitted
2) Notes regarding listings (added pages, books being closed, etc.) permitted
3) Notices and Notes regarding non-Stamporama items are prohibited.
4) Self promotion of stamp stores or other off site venues prohibited.
5) Third party advertising absolutely prohibited - attempted circumvention of this provision may result in loss of auction and/or approval privileges. Egregious violations may be grounds for expulsion from membership in Stamporama.
6) All posts in this section of the Discussion Board are limited to 60 days for approval books related posts and 14 days for Auction related posts and may be deleted by moderators, without notice, upon expiration of these time periods. Posts should be removed by the author if the purpose for the post expires before the end of these time periods.
7) Responses to posts in this section are limited to requests for clarification or amended comments by the author of the original posts. All other responses may be deleted by moderators without notice.

Excellent suggested list of rules. I really like keeping the focus on our system and not allowing the site to become a billboard for every sales site under the sun. And the 60 day delete keeps the topic from becoming cluttered with old announcements. Actually, the way the approvals are so active for the first few days, 60 days might be more than we need. 30 days would be sufficient and would keep the topic more timely.

WHOA, hold on there, partners!!! What has happen to my original post & idea?????
With no notice to me, I see that my original topic heading has been hijacked and morphed into something completely different. Over the past several months, mods have preached about the sanctify of replies being on topic to the original posting and I see that all except Bobby's 1st post as having any relationship to my original post.
If you wish to discuss self-promotion, please create a new topic heading and do so.
And Bobby, in reply to your 1st post, the function I detailed would create no DB postings, only email alerts to those members would wish to use the function. It is a function I have seen used on other sites and was wondering if it would be of help to members here. I, personally, am fully capable of using the search function but some members may not be and might prefer another method. Also, as an added benefit, it may make sellers give better descriptions to their title listings to cause a listing to show up in an alert.
I may be a little upset at the moment but give me a couple of minutes and after the Alzheimer's sets it, I will be back to normal.

We can currently subscribe to emails when a seller posts a new approval book. I agree that it would be great if we could get similar notifications when a seller lists auction lots. I would have bought much more from certain sellers in the auctions had I gotten such notifications. Also knowing when certain countries get listed would be very helpful, especially the countries that are not provided here all that often. Topical collectors would most likely appreciate that as well.
The more information that is available to the members will help members add to their collections, and help selling members get some more money in their pockets to buy more stamps, or take care of other needs if they need the money for that.

I would like to see an email alert when a seller you select lists something new in the auctions, similar to the email alerts for approvals.

Sorry, Mike. I didn't mean to offend you or hijack your topic. Michael's suggestion is one I have been promoting in many forms for quite a while, and I took my opportunity to further it here. I did not change the topic name so much as amended it so I could not accused by the dastardly moderators of getting "off topic" (yeah, I know, sneaky, huh?)
I actually think the idea of more alerts is very unattractive. As a moderator, I read every single post, everyday, several times a day, and probably spend less than a combined 1 hour doing so. I do not need nor do I want email alerts. I get enough spam as is. The Discussion Board is laid out so logically, and the icons denoting new posts so easily identifiable, I just do not understand why anyone feels the need for "email alerts."

Michael #'s & Doug. Thank you for your replies. Doug, both you and I used this type of function in our pre-SOR days at Wensy (and maybe Stampoffers also, not sure) and I am certain we both found items we wanted with it.
Bobby, understand your lack of desire to use it, so just do not. Its use would be strictly voluntary by the potential buying member. Just another tool for them. I can see it being used by the member who visits only once a week or so, would help them is sorting thru all the listings since their last visit. And, as I said, it might force sellers to improve their title descriptions. All without any DB activity, so NO additional work for mods.
And Bobby, as to the title change, go do the right thing and go find a box of wet noodles and give yourself a good whipping out back behind the barn. HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE
