There is a "wanted to buy" category for requests. Maybe your post might encourage folks to post "wish lists."
You can state your wish lists under this topic. Under present rules, you may not state that you, personally, are going to list certain items or post specific subjects in the approvals books. See the current discussion regarding this topic HERE
No, no intention of posting what I intend to put in books, just trying to get a feel as to what members might want to add to their collections. There seems to be an awful lot for some countries and nothing for others.
Greg, all selling is a crap shoot. Anyone selling anything can only put it out to see if someone wants to buy it.
As for the auctions not being a good venue. The approval books were intended to try and move the nickle and dime items out of the auctions and put them in the approval books. There is still a ton of nickle and dime material in the auctions to have to wade through.
Nineteenth and early 20th Century material carries more value than modern stuff, and much of it may be more appropriate for auction listings. Of course nothing stops it from being offered in approval books, like nothing stops nickel and dime items from being offered in auctions. That's how things are, and it's the seller's choice to select which venue to sell in.
I find that members here have a voracious appetite for the approval books. Put it up and see what happens, especially if there aren't that many (or no) books from that area. Those who subscribe to emails when you post new approval books will know when and what you list.
Michael you are right about just put anything up. I don't mind doing that when time permits, which I have a little extra of right now. I've had some winners that surprised me and some dogs that I would have thought would sell like hotcakes.

Greg, your posts tell a story of a problem that I have been trying to figure out an answer to. I had made a post in the the past requesting feedback from buyers as to what they might be interested in seeing listed on auctions (I only do auctions), however, the few answers received were for very specialized material.
I believe that some members may feel that if they publicly post some idea of their wants, then they might be required to commit to a purchase if a seller lists the requested material. This need not be a concern of the potential buyer, as he always has the option to buy or not based on condition, price, terms, etc. I thought of making a post that if a buyer wanted to relay his wants to me, that I would then make a post of them without revealing their name, thus saving them that worry. However, things came up and I did not follow thru on that idea.

well I'll post a response about my wants, if that's appropriate.
I loved Gregory's books; i picked many; and he even offered my duplicates when asked.
I would love to see more of that, but even more I would like to see tied seals, that is, Christmas, Easter and other seals tied by postmark or other postal markings to the cover and used in period.
I also like oddball covers, with auxillary markings or interesting rates, especially airmail special delivery and other multiple services.

Ralph, I'm not an enforcer, but I know that a seller cannot mention what the seller has listed for sale.
Now you might want to consider this, as you can do this... David posts now and then about interesting items he, as the auctioneer, finds in the auctions. You could, if you so desire, post about interesting approval books that you find. So can anyone else, but not the one who is selling. So, you would not be able to mention any books that you are selling.
For example, I can post that soundcrest has posted a book with Nepal and Qatar (it is true he posted it yesterday and the book has a good mix of stamps), since I am not the seller.
"Now a question to our DB enforcers: If someone lists a wanted area, is it appropriate to respond by mentioning a corresponding Approval Book (new, or old), or is it still viewed as self promotion?"
Thanks for the plug Michael!
Greg I think everyone is missing the point here
These are thing I'd like to see
Israle with Tabs
Naval covers
Back of the Book
US pre-cancels
First Flight Covers
list the catalog numbers for older stamps because some issuse look alike but migth but are different.
That is just a sample of things I would like to see in approvals books.
I read a lot of these posting in this section, and for the most part people miss the point of the question that is being asked, and talk about something they feel is more important then the question being asked.
I hope I have gotten my point across
The only point you haven't gotten across is how do you pronounce your user name? I'm tongue-tied trying to figure it out!
Sometimes I think a "Don't Like" button would be nice
Has there ever been a thread for members to mention what they would like to see in either approval books or auctions? I know for myself its hit and miss what I should put in a book. There also seems to be areas lacking books but I don't know if that is because members have put up books and there was no interest, or that there simply is no one with enough material to put up books. A case in point is US. Tons of recent material in books but sparse if any between say 1880-1930. I know checking all those Washington and Franklin's is time consuming to say the least, and maybe that's why nothing is there. Auctions it hardly seems worth the effort but perhaps as more members join, auctions will become more popular. After mostly failing at those, I'm content to sit and wait, but maybe there are areas that members would like to see auction material put up. Any thoughts on this?
Greg
